A 330ml bottle with a BB of Dec 2017, so it's a little out of date. Acquired a while back from the Brewdog webshop. I'm hoping its strength will have preserved it. The label describes it as a smoked porter with coffee and blackcurrant; apparently the idea came about after the head brewer tasted some blackcurrant puree.
A: Poured into a tulip. Bottle conditioned. A very dark ruby-brown hue that appears pitch black in the glass. Tons of floating sediment is visible when held to the light. Produces a decent head of creamy tan foam that lasts for a few minutes before subsiding to a patchy surface layer.
S: Aroma of rich roasted malt with hints of coffee, burnt grain, smoke, molasses, ale yeast, vague earthiness and a twinge of fruitiness in the background. Nice.
T: Tastes of dark malt with notes of roasted grain, bitter coffee, smokiness, molasses, ale yeast, earthiness, stewed leaves and a touch of blackcurrant. Slightly sweet, accompanied by a robust malt-driven bitterness upon swallowing.
M: Mouthfeel is smooth and lightly tingly, with soft carbonation and decent body. Could be a tad creamier given the strength. Aftertaste of bitter roasted malt, coffee, molasses, mild smoke and a hint of fruitiness.
O: Very nice - a lovely intense porter with subtle fruity highlights. Looks good, while the aroma and flavour are a great blend of roasted malt, molasses, smoke, yeast and faint fruit. Body is alright but a shade too thin. Can't tell if the blackcurrant has faded or not; it may once have been more distinct. Goes down a treat - great for dark beer lovers.
