Shattered Dream is the imperial version of our favourite breakfast stout - Broken Dream. Even more unctuous than the original, we've amped up the flavours to deliver sweet biscuit, dark chocolate and deep roasted coffee notes. This edition contains salt and speciality malts for a salted caramel undertone.

This beer pours very dark brown, and is essentially black, in a Pretentious Beer Glass Company Malti Snifter. A thin, half-inch, chestnut head is fine, then quickly dissipates to a ring and a fog, leaving no other lace. The head tries to rebuild with a swirl, leaving only spotty lace and a viscuous film that quickly falls.
The aroma is initially fusile, followed by cocoa nibs, some caramel and some soap. There is a light roast, and no coffee aroma.
Baker's Chocolate leads the way, followed by roasted malt and a modest bitterness in balance with sweetness. The finish is long and subtle and becomes sweet as it draws out.
A full body works well with a soft, smooth texture. Alcohol is below expectation while the carbonation is fine and fizzy.
While this is a decent beer, it falls short of what I would call a desert beer. It is more sweet and has a higher alcohol than I would expect from an American Stout. It is, however, an Imperial Stout and I enjoyed it even though my expectations were never quite met.
