#1700. Something a bit special for this review, a new brew from Siren. Part blind-tasted, I only know for the beer's name/style, plus I know it's around/above 10% or so. I've read no reviews elsewhere; in fact not even the back lable, yet! [It can be more fun doing it this way].
L- Packaged in, well a 1/2 champagne bottle type affair, 375ml. Pours utterly jet black, even held right by a halogen bulb Poured into a large Tripel Karmeliet tulip style glass intended for a 330ml of the latter, but the glass will happily fit 500ml. The head is dark tan and ultra-fine bubbles. It mostly cleared quite swiftly (unsurprising as I'm aware Siren brew high ABVs which can't usually hold head long), and is now a 5mm ring around the sides of the glass. ps 10mins later, the ring holds well.
S- Liquor, but a hint of wine too? It smells like whisky to me, but when I get liquor+wine it suggests (IME) brandy. Hmm! I try again, it must be whisky. I also get a mildy smoked note coming through.
T- BOOOOM! Holy Mama! Cocoa, a flash of it then right into mega-deep 'black beer' toasty/deep malts/molasses/pungency ---> LIQUOR, MEGA-whisky, BAAAAAM [!!] so much so that I physically shudder. Good grief this is one of the most pungent beers I've had, certainly in the top 5% for big-hitting impact on the palate.
F- Very high impact = a slow-sipping beer, in fact one that would be a delight to slow-sip fire-side after dinner. This shouts 'winter log fire!!', jeez it could probably help get one alight too the way it tastes ... drink this, squint at the wet logs and watch them explode into flames.
O- Absolutely MASSIVE. I apologise for the upper-case shouting but it is no less that what this beer is doing. It is almost off the scale pungent and 'loud'. The wonder is that it can be this much of a hooligan on the palate and yet still be so quietly intriguing to drink. Would I drink it again - ah, I involuntarily smile... hell yes I would, and certainly. And even more certainly if someone else was getting the round in.
Wow what a statement beer this one is. Right, I reckon the liquor is whisky barrel and I'm intrigued to see if there is a wine or brandy note in this too.
Review/scoring all done, now the reveal, I get to read the bottle lables to see what I missed! ===> Aged in 'Bourbon, rum, port and whisky barrels'. Wow, no wonder. Contains molasses and muscovado... oh and it's a pretty thumping 12.7%.
350ml bottle Bottled: 23/10/20 after 3 years in barrels. £9, bought directly from Siren as part of a pick-your own consignment to London.
