Had from the engine at The Big Society pub on Cowley Road in Oxford. About as authentic as it gets for me.
Obviously fresh and unpasteurized, this was a treat for me. A bit golden for a mild, the Looks were not distinguished; just enough foam and lace. Smells were mostly malt, though the grass was back. Tastes were a classic, balanced by just a few hops. Buttery and soft. Went well with my veggie burger (in fact was much better than burger.) Big Society deserved a second glass from me; but I had to run. (And I don't like bars much.)
I went on Shotover's website and they seem to be a classic Oxfordshire and Cotswolds brewery. Cask-conditioned in the classic styles, so they don't seem to travel too much or too far. But, I'm very glad to have experienced this tradition in its elements.
