A collaboration with North Fork Brewery that we did a while back before we knew things were going to be like this. We are really excited to share this one, an oak smoked wheat lager. Easy drinking at 4.8%, with a kiss of smoke that couldn’t be more perfectly balanced.

Beautiful rich clear golden amber body with a generous tuft of white foam that I can see receding, but it's doing it slowly. Solid lacing along the side of the glass.

Nose is a nice grainy caramel and fruity wheat initially with a pleasant layer of smoke drifting throughout it all. Incorporeal, as smoke do. The sweet wheat makes sense considering what it is, but it's not to my preference.

The wheat is sweet again on the tongue is my first impression. The smoke attempts to provide the balance for that with some floral and earthy musty hops, but it feels more like it juts in directions than really coming together in harmony as I'd hoped. I know I'm not that into wheat, but I do enjoy smoke, so I thought I could sneak it by myself. I was not as successful as I had hoped.

The biggest disappointment for me, though, might be the watery thin body that doesn't really prop any of the components up, doing itself no favours. Prickly carbonation works, but the thinness isn't what I'm looking for, and the lingering finish has elements of the three main flavours: some residual sweetness, some smoky astringency, and a lasting earthy dull bitterness. I actually enjoy the level of smoke, it's definitely there, but it doesn't overwhelm, and the bitterness of the finish is pleasant, but a stool needs all three legs to work and overall here it just doesn't hold all together for me. Oh well, you can't win 'em all!
