Right Hand Path is a bit of a beer/wine hybrid. Brewed initially as a saison with buckwheat, this beer went through fermentation in oak and aged for a number of months before being transferred onto a barely legal amount of Sangiovese grapes with brettanomyces and refermented. Once stable, it was bottle conditioned. Bright red, and lightly carbonated, it closely resembles a frizzante lambrusco.

I haven’t even heard of Standard Brewing, but when I saw this one on Tavour I was intrigued. A fully fermented Saison refermented with wine grapes and brett sounds like an awesome combination of elements for a funky beer. Let’s pop this bad boy open and see what it’s all about

Pours a cloudy reddish purple with 2 fingers of pinkish purple head that fades to a ring and leaves minimal lacing

The nose is very jammy and funky, really feeling like a bold red wine. I’m picking up on aromas of tannic red wine, blackberry sorbet, black pepper, black cherry, dark toast, lemon zest, light vanilla, and dry oak

It doesn’t have quite the same immediacy in taste, but it is still oddly close to a red wine. On the front end of the sip I’m tasting tannic red wine, tart raspberry, black pepper, jammy sorbet, burnt caramel, dark bread, aged hops, and honey. The swallow brings notes of sweet red wine, blackberry sorbet, black cherry, vanilla, dry oak, black pepper, and light plum

A medium body pairs with gentle tingling carbonation, resulting in a sharp beer. Finishes neutral and a bit sweet

This is solid stuff. Maybe I’ll pick up something else from these guys if I see them on Tavour again

funky buckwheat saison base fermented in oak and refermented on sangiovese grapes, really something special here, bretty, sweet, fruity, vinous, layered, and a standout from our special grape beer share last night. this has a pretty deep purple color to it, only light carbonation, and a nice shine to it. the nose is richly fruity and woody, very much wine-like, more than many of the others we drank, the grapes are complex, more like finished wine than fruit in some ways, soft tannins, a vanilla note, blackberry, plum, slate, wild bretty funk thats really well developed, and moderate acidity. i get something cool from the grain too, subtle as it is, the buckwheat must be, and it serves to keep this beery enough, give it some earthy spicy, and make this quite distinct from the others. i like that i can pick out sangiovese grapes, i love the dry almost gritty finish, and the little bit of alcohol coming through fits right in. i definitely dont mind the light carbonation either, it slows this down in a cool way, stays on the palate longer. real cool fermentation profile on this, light body, warms up very well, amazing complexity overall. probably the best beer ive had from these guys, makes me even more excited to visit when i am in seattle next weekend!
