Appearance: A pinky of head that barely laced and didn't stick around is a bit disappointing. The body is an opaque black as a good stout should be.
Smell: Has a light smokiness that seems to hide some mildly sweet coffee like malt with a slight sandy note to it all. Warming helps bring it out more, but not overly so.
Taste: They really hit the right touch on the malt as it has a slight smokiness to it and comes across as slightly sweet but not overly so. Kind of like coffee with just the right amount of sugar added to it. That smokey note stays around for the entire beer as a light earth hop note finishes it off. Simple, but very well done.
Mouthfeel: It definitely has the smoothness of an Oatmeal stout, but it's a bit lacking in the creaminess factor due to the lacklustre head. That smokey note hangs around in the aftertaste, but never builds upon itself where it becomes annoying. Transitioning is decent.
Drinkability: Fairly heavy on the body, so it does drink like a meal, but not ridiculously so. Certainly the bitterness is toned down a bit and the sedate carbonation means it settles decently. I dunno though, it just seems a bit too tame for a stout.
Final Thoughts: I would propose renaming this beer, the smokey stare, as that smokey note is the defining characteristic of this beer as remains steady and at the same consistent level from smell to aftertaste. It could be a bit more complicated or carry a bit more impact I suppose, but all around, I had a good experience here. One thumb up and give it a whirl.
