Appearance: Poured with a half finger of head that did manage to lace a bit, but didn't stick around. The body is a neutral amber color that boast clarity but very low carbonation.
Smell: Has a citrus note to it that seems to backup a peculiar toffee malt. Warming seems to bring out more hops as a more earthy presence makes itself known.
Taste: Starts off well enough, as the malt seems to take on a certain toastiness but have a dialed back sweetness to it. Unfortunately things go south quick, as an overwhelming, almost IPA level earthy hop flush just drowns out anything else the beer had to offer.
Mouthfeel: That muddy hop taste just won't go away, and it really comes out of nowhere too. The carbonation is also very low on this one, which is made worse by the fact it only accents the end of the beer. The pleasant peculiarity at the start of the beer is the only thing that saves it from a 1.
Drinkability: Well, I guess it would be refreshing if it was palatable, and I guess it would be medium bodied if not for that awful bitter kick. However, I can't finish this beer and can't think of a good reason to keep drinking it.
Final Thoughts: If this is truly representative of what a New Zealand ale is supposed to be, I can only ask what the heck is wrong with the Kiwis? I'm really disappointed in Kilannan on this one, as their Kolsch and Alt is WAY better then this stuff. It tastes like I'm drinking a mudslide. Not the chocolate type, but actually wet mud coming down from a hill. I can't honestly recommend this beer and my recommendation if you visit the brewery is to stick to their Kolsch and Alt. Two thumbs down.

L- Pours a nice red amber colour, with about 1/2 finger of head.
L- A medium amber red colour, somewhat cloudy. 1 1/2 fingers of head when poured at an angle into an ale glass.
S- The hops smell incredibly citrusy (orangey?), and delicious.
T- It uses a hop different from any I have yet tried, It has both a centennial hop taste, but it ends kind of earthy as well. Citrus very apparent. It is interesting because most ambers to date have tasted very aleish (going in creamy and going down fairly full), but this one tastes and feels almost like a very pale English IPA. It is said to be low on the hops scale, but it measures up to something like the Muskoka detour.
F- Quite light bodied, goes in crisp, ends dry.
O- Quite an enjoyable amber, though it tasted hoppier than the name lets on. Would drink it again, unfortunately it isn't sold in the LCBO.
