16.9oz bottle purchased at Community Pint for $10.99. According to the rear label (where the name is), it's a "three grain, barrel fermented saison. Aged in single use, Red Mountain wine barrels."
Foamy bottle upon opening. Poured into a Selkirk Abbey Belgian glass. Hazy, honey color, with a big, off-white head.
Nose is of spicy, grassy, and a bit viniferous. Definitely some wine barrel aroma in the background.
The wine barrels are more upfront in the taste than in the smell. It doesn't quite squeeze out the expected saison-type flavor, but it comes close. Otherwise, the flavor is of a well-crafted saison: Belgian spicy yeast notes, some grassy, sharp citrus notes, and a little dry.
Between light and medium bodied, with a slightly crisp, dry mouthfeel.
Not bad at all. The wine barrel aging has given this a lot of extra character, but I think the base saison is pretty good on it's own. Glad to see Aslan available locally.
