Reviewed from notes taken in Vienna 3-5 years ago.
Expectations were average going in.
No bubble show formed as it was poured on-draught into a .5L stangenglas.
HEAD: 2 fingers in height. White in colour. Nice creaminess and thickness. Decent softness. Pretty good (~5-6 minute) retention. Leaves uneven lacing on the sides of the glass as it recedes.
BODY: Translucent semitransparent yellow-copper of above average vibrance. No yeast/sediment is visible within. Clean.
Appears well-carbonated. Not unique or special in appearance for the style. No obvious flaws are noticeable. All in all, it's an above average appearance for a zwicklbier.
AROMA: Aerated malts. Pilsner malt/2-row. Maybe Munich malt? Has that classic zwicklbier dampness/subtle funkiness. Also has some light floral hop character.
A pleasant aroma of below average intensity. No overt alcohol or off-notes are detectable.
TASTE: Pilsner malt, aerated 2-row. Hints of dampness/aerated almost fungal funkiness. A hint of medicinal cough drop/artificial sugar flavouring is present to its detriment. Light floral hop flavour. Clean barley.
Slightly imbalanced and rather plain/simplistic for a zwicklbier. Below average depth of flavour. Average flavour duration. Low flavour intensity.
No real subtlety or nuance is present here. It's cohesive enough in build, but lacks any intricacy. Underwhelming.
TEXTURE: Smooth. Wet. Crisp. Overcarbonated. Unrefreshing. Biting and sharp on the palate. Medium-bodied.
Doesn't particularly suit the flavour all that well, and presence on the palate is subpar.
OVERALL: Actually somewhat difficult to down given its overcarbonation and the unpleasant aerated taste. I'll finish the pint, but I wouldn't get another. There are far better zwicklbiere out there. Unremarkable.
