Reviewed from notes taken at the brewpub 3-5 years ago. Served on-draught into a .3L stangenglas.
No bubble show forms as it's poured.
HEAD: 1.5 fingers in height. Pale khaki colour. Boasts nice thickness and creaminess. Fairly soft. Pretty good (~5 minute) retention. Leaves consistent lacing on the sides of the glass as it recedes.
BODY: Vibrant glowing amber. Translucent. Transparent. Clean; no yeast/sediment is visible within.
Appears perfectly carbonated. Has great colour for an altbier. Presents well.
AROMA: Amber malts, sticky malt sweetness, caramel, a hint of bread crust, and a kiss of either roasted barley or toasted malt.
No yeast is detectable, nor are any off-notes. Suggests a crisp clean drinking beer with subtle flavours. Quite inviting and pleasant, though mild in terms of aromatic intensity.
TASTE: Caramel, sticky amber malt/red malt, and bread crust. I find no overt yeasty, hoppy or off-flavours. Quite simple in build. I expected far better given the quality of the appearance and aroma.
Balanced and cohesive, though lacking in terms of nuance and quite shallow. Not a gestalt whole of a beer.
Flavour duration and intensity are average.. I do like it, but it's largely unremarkable.
TEXTURE: Slightly dry and coarse, especially in the early second act. Refreshing. Light-bodied. Very approachable. This mouthfeel suits the style nicely and is very well executed. Feels like the texture of a much better altbier. Aptly carbonated.
OVERALL: Definitely drinkable and enjoyable. I could have another and it's certainly above average for an altbier, but the taste just doesn't hold up to the rest of the beer's characteristics. Worth trying when at the brewery, but not a world class expression of the style.
High C+ (3.25) / ABOVE AVERAGE
