This presented with an important caveat. Tavernjef had had it afresh, when cherries were present in a truer form, and this growler is from a version using a cherry extract.
Appearance: puzzling, at first. Why so yellow, if cherries are involved? See above. Hazy plae gold, small, vanishing head.
Nose is rather good, though, sweet, flowery, honeyish, and fruity, bearing the distinctive mark of cherry, without, um, really having it. Sweet cherry is the predominant association, with a hit of sour on the side, plus melon, peach, and more.
Light mouthfeel, low hops, strong malt.
Becomes very thin before long, and flavor begins to fade. Too bad, this could've been something else, and according to tj, it was once.
Thanks, tavernjef!

Hazy light golden color. Looks like a wit. A bubbly small white head sits on top. Aroma is cherry-vanilla.....sweetner. It's too sweet. Like extract. The taste is artificial. Cherry extract bigtime. Not a lot of other substance to note. Maybe some light wheat notes. Not very enjoyable. I'll pass the next time.

Thanks for the effort TavernJeff.

This beer was reviewed from a growler. A very cloudy looking golden hue with decent white head. It reminds me of a Wit in looks. Cherries are the predominent aroma here with maybe a touch of butterscotch. It has a mellow cherry flavor and a toasted malt finish. The body is light and maybe a bit of citrusy hop flavor behind the cherries. A good quencher after a day hiking along Superior.

Revisited May 2003 -

I was a bit disappointed to find out that sense this is a year round offering the cherry flavor is an extract and not made from real cherries, and once the owner explained that using real cherries would be very expensive for where he is located, which is in the middle of nowheresville, he uses the extract. Made sense to me, but was bummed, I thought perhaps he was using those funky yellow cherries, but nope, extract, and it shows. Now that I've had a recent revisit of New Glarus Belgian Red as well, made with a pound of real cherries, I can really detect the extractness of the flavor and smell in this one. I still enjoyed this beer though. So my original review has now been altered a bit to add my new found fondness, if you can call it that?

Color is a light, golden yellow with a slight haze to it, no real head was on it when served, just some small bubbles on the top and around the edge. Smell is slightly fruity hoppy & wheaty , fresh aroma with a cherry sharpness right smack in the front and over the top but has vanilla like notes from extract. Taste is very clean and sharp with a good cherry sting and a wheat backing. This is a very sharp tasting beer. It bites right away and doesn't let go. The extract vanilla-like note lingers in the overall cherry taste, but still makes for a good enjoyable drink. Feel is a lighter, medium body with some sharp sourness and gets lightly dry hoppyness and a wheaty light texture. This is super drinkable when cold. The cherry flavor really pops but isn't the least bit overwhelming at all. The cherryness fades as it warms, but its still pretty darn good warm too. Extract included, I still think this is a pretty yummy little beer.
