I see that this beer is marked as Retired. Maybe that explains my recent disappointing experience with it, i.e. maybe the bottle I got was an old bottle. However, I bought it from a store that I go to regularly and I don't remember seeing this out on the shelf before.... So keeping that in mind, I opened it two days after having bought it and refrigerated it, and it bubbled over more/longer than any other beer i've bought - and I drink Belgian beers, so I am accepting that bubble-over can occur, but the duration was ridiculous. The other fatal flaw for me was that the taste was too "off" for me. That could be due to spoilage, but hard to tell since this beer has a complex flavor profile of bourbon and ipa. By the way, I am a fan of straight up bourbon, as well as other bourbon barrel aged beers like New Holland Dragon Milk Stout, so the disagreeable aspect of the taste is not due to me being unfamiliar with a bourbon-enhanced brew.

interesting twist on a brew. by appearance you'd never guess this was a black ipa as it shows off the qualities of a stout. jet black, tan/khaki head, 2 finger head w/ minimal lacing. scent has a bitter, boozy kick with a malty hop sting. taste is surprisingly smooth. not picking up much moonshine but a roasted hop flavor really comes through. mouthfeel is full, enough carbonation and the alcohol is present but mildly so. Overall, worth trying and sharing.
