Shebeen Brewing Company "Shaun White IPA"
1 pint can without production codes or freshness dating
$3.99 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ
Notes via stream of consciousness: Haha! Interesting name. "Shaun" White IPA. I wouldn't be surprised if they got a cease and desist on that one though. Anyway, it's poured a cloudy yellow gold with an orange sheen beneath a full head of foamy bright white. The aroma is tropical with pineapple, pine, and passionfruit. There's a light bit of malt but I'm not really finding the coriander or the lemon peel. The flavor is quite bold with hops as well, pretty much overshadowing the coriander, and certainly the lemon peel as that could easily be coming from hops. There is a note of lemon in the finish though, which might or might not be due to the lemon peel, and although I don't clearly get coriander out of it, there is some woodiness to it that I'm guessing is coming from it, and a little bit of a floral note that's probably due to it as well. I'm getting some berry which I'm assuming is coming from the Mosaic, and some mango as well. It's pretty nice I have to say, but the hops take it beyond a "white IPA" and into something else altogether. I should also point out that I don't really get any Belgian yeast character. It might be there, but if it is it's overshadowed but the aggressive hopping. Which brings me to bitterness. It's solid. I'm not sure how many IBUs we're talking about here but it cuts through. This is an IPA, not one of those newfangled "IPAs" with "zero" or close to zero IPAs. No, this one has some teeth, and no doubt the spiciness of the coriander is adding to it. What did I miss, body? Medium bodied with a bit of a dextrinous feel, and crisp with a fine-bubbled carbonation. Looking back it's also left some nice lacing about the glass, maybe not enough to get it to a 4.25 out of 5 but close. Overall pretty nice. Worth trying.
