This Imperial Stout was aged in Heaven Hill Bourbon barrels for 3 months and then blended back with a small portion of fresh stout. Notes of dark chocolate, dark fruit, coffee, vanilla, and oak. Naturally carbonated.

I grabbed this at Craft Beer Cellar in Waterbury on 24FEB18. Checking it out now, 18MAR18...
Poured some into a small Smutty snifter... it is a deep, dark, opaque black bier. Head is light and thin, mostly some tan bubbles around the edge... Lacing is on the lighter side. The aroma had dark choco, a smidge of coffee, and some light bourbon. Body was a good medium, and it was pretty smooth going down.
Flavor has some choco and coffee, with a hint of vanilla. There's also some light bourbon and oak lurking about, with suggestions of dark fruit. Hopping is on the light side, with a bit of floral action and an earthy touch. Solid and tasty, though not earth-shattering... Should have saved #1999 for this one... Oh well... Prosit!

2017 release.
This was poured into a snifter.
The appearance was a jet black color with barely any head or lace, but don't let that fool you, just you wait and read further.
The aroma had an absolutely majestic blend of sweet coffee (espresso-like) to rich smooth milk chocolate, a tickle of maple, then the bourbon sweetness. Super light vanilla. Stifled woody/barrel sweetness with a sweet earthiness followed in. Light char/sweet ash.
The flavor leaned slightly towards the sweet side encompassing the bourbon barrel to the milk chocolate, sweet coffee and that tickle of maple showed up again. Ample amount of some bitterness and roastiness (the char/ash dried it out just a little bit but not bothersome). Aftertaste leaned into a superb rich milk chocolate to coffee with char/ashy notes enriching but not drying.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with an absolutely awesome sipping quality about it. Thought the "boozy heat" isn't felt, the "mobility" of this beer along my tongue is absolutely fantastic. There's nothing cloying, there's nothing overly gripping, there's nothing tiresome. It's just a superb mouthfeel. Carbonation felt fine, nothing off.
Overall, I'm left scratching my beard in a damn good way! 14th Star?!?!?!?! The 14th Star in St. Albans? Yes, them, they brewed this, the same guys I used to like to think that brewed that "Maple Breakfast Porter" or I should think it should be called a porter. And the only reason I say that is not to pick on 14th Star here but to say that "brewers grow." They continue to learn and learn to get not only their basics right but can move to brew absolutely stellar beers. This is proof! Really hoping I can find another bottle to age, I'm extremely curious to see how this one would age since it came out so right!
