On tap at the brewery – 04/12/14
Full pint served in a Tulip style glass
Listed as a Dry-Hopped Saison – 6.6% ABV
A: Dark caramel amber body with modest clarity through the glass. Looks darker than any Saison I have witnessed. Nice finger width of bone white suds retains for a few moments eventually subsiding to some sudsy remnants. Messy sheets of lace are scattered about the glass upon each sip.
S: The nose opens with rifts of Farmhouse ale yeast. I get lots of sour orange peel, coriander, and dry grass notes as well as a slight sulfur note to it. The hops seem a bit stale in contrast however they do provide a nice floral quality. Touch of caramel malt sweetness and white biscuit noted. Smell is fairly nice and inviting overall.
T: The flavors expand more of the spiced yeast components with dry orange peel, coriander, white pepper, and banana peel. Again I get a mild Sulfur like component. Malt is rather firm here with a sweet suggestion of caramelized crackers. Floral pines intermingle with a touch of fruity hops and the balance is nice with a lower amount of actual bitterness on the palate. Nice dry and crisp action with no alcohol flavor making it through. Pretty good but definitely not your traditional Saison.
M: Medium light to moderate body with a nice even consistency from the carbonation. Low amount of bitterness. Finishes with a nice drying crisp. Very balanced feel overall between wet and dry.
D: Not a favorite from Refuge and definitely not my favorite Saison but this is a nice and unique offering. I think the base recipe could use some small fine-tuning. Comes off a bit too sweet and malty compared to most Saisons I have sampled. Fun to try and still enjoyable however.
