22oz bottle picked up at Palm Springs Liquor in La Mesa, CA
Split with my brother into a Russian River tulip and a Ballast Point Belgian-style tulip (mine)
p- black with a 1-2f tan head; nice lace
n- sharp orange notes and chocolate; very inviting
T- wow- awesome profile; orange notes in the forward fade to chocolate and roast (although orange sticks around to compliment); like chocolate orange candy- outstanding
mf- med-full bodied w/ med carb; suits the profile well
o- once again, outstanding; surprised to have tried such a notable beer from a relatively unknown brewery

Dark fruit and chocolate tones meet hops. Balanced between malts and hops and better than I expected. I went in thinking it’s a stout and wasn’t sure what to make of it other than I enjoyed it more than a stout as I’m not much of a stout guy, so this is a dark (very dark) IPA.

Bottled on 8/7/15.
Pours an almost opaque crimson-brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Foamy rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa powder, vanilla, and pine needle aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa powder, char, earth, pine needle, and citrus zest flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of roast and hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with a solid balance between the roast and hop characteristics that comes through slightly better in the taste.
Serving type: bottle.

Pours a deep, deep ruby with a huge tan head and lacing that won't stop sticking.
Smells pretty malty and toasty, hops come through strong as well, a bit of pine and citrus, balanced pretty well.
Taste is roasted malt and grains up front, notes of roasted coffee and dark chocolate as well. The hop bitterness hits directly after; piney, resinous, bitter.
I feel this is a pretty well balanced black IPA, good amounts of roast and bitterness mix well to make this one pretty decent. I look forward to trying more from this brewery.

Dark reddish brown with a light tan head, piled up nicely in the tall Maredsous glass. Wonderful aroma of cedar and fruity-citrus hops.
Malty with a lot of roasted grain and just enough blackened flavors. Some sweetness, but not as much as a DIPA. Resiny and gummy. One of the better Black IPAs that I've tasted. A nice use of hops that avoids excessive bitterness while delivering a lot of aromatics.
Another beer from the Temecula brewing hotspot that is worth seeking out. I like their slogan on the label: "Subtle? Hardly." From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Olive Tree Market in Ocean Beach.

I am generally not a fan of the current "fad?" of black IPAs. However, this one has won me over. Black in color with a very short and fast lived khaki head. Good looking. Nose is typical citrusy, fruity bitter IPA but with an assertive chocolate tone; the juxtaposition actually works and is nice. Mouthfeel is rich and bold and the flavor profile is big, bold and flavorful with the best of a good IPA and, actually, the best of a real drinkable chocolate malty stout. Very drinkable in almost all respects.
