Purchased 22oz bottle from Mission Wine and Spirits in Woodland Hills, CA - the very tiny and hard to read date appears to be 10/5/17, so 2 years ago. As one might expect from a bottle that's been shelved so long, the pour was pretty flat, almost zero foam on this very dark brown beer.

The smell is dark fruit: prune, raisin - taste follows nose.... yeah it's fermented prune juice, some molasses notes. Similar to some of the german doppelbock offerings, just not as well executed as say Salvator, or Celebrator. Alcohol is fairly noticeable.

I'd think this one might be quite nice on tap, however this bottle was fairly 'meh' to me.

Handsome dark reddish brown beer with a long-lasting beige foam. Lovely lacing in the Rodenbach Grand Cru goblet. Brewery says this is the double black IPA with cocoa, molasses, brown sugar, and dried peppers. And after it warms you can taste the very lovely wine barrel flavor from the aging.

This is malty but not overly sweet. Moderately dry finish and just enough of the yeasty taste. Peppers add another layer of subtle warmth along with the alcohol, which is not dominating either. Sudsy mouthfeel and a sharp note that is moderated by the burnt sugar flavors. A little bitter aftertaste but not hoppy.

This is just so complex and interesting with the dark fruit flavors brightened up by the winey notes. Another well-made brew from Wiens, and the best Belgian-inspired strong beer I've had lately. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at the brewery tasting room in Temecula.
