Appearance: A nearly black dark brown. Beige and rocky head. With sticky lacing all over the glass. Head retention is very nice.

Nose: Lots of fruity hops. Malty aromatics, with a bit of yeast. Cascade hops all over the place!

Taste: A watery sensation. Malty sweetness Some cascade bitter aftertaste.

Dark brown, nearly black in the tumbler with a bubbly beige head. Pleasantly carbonated in the mouth. Big fruity and spicy hop aroma. Light body with a refreshing watery sensation.

Some malty sweetness with a big leafy, hoppy tanginess. This has that endlessly pleasurable Cascades spicy note. Rather bitter aftertaste but overall it's quite drinkable. Better than a lot of black IPAs for having some malty and aromatics, as well as a more controlled bitterness.

This bottled version says 8%, which is still too strong for something like an oatmeal stout with a hop jolt. But it's a pleasurable beer to sip and what the hell, gulp. From the 22 oz bottle bought at La Bodega Wines & Spirits in Riverside.

On Tap at the Brewery – Temecula, CA
Notes from 08/18/13 - 4oz taster

A: Dark brown coffee like appearance that sits closer to black in the glass. Has a much lighter edge on it however. Thin dark khaki foam cap that dissipates out to just a halo within moments displaying some pretty poor lacing.

S: Smells of real piney evergreens with a bit dark roasted malts mixed in. I get a dry roasty char and just the lightest dash of chocolates coming through. Piney hops stand firm however. Pretty nice nose overall.

T: Tastes follows suit with a pronounced pine hop presence combined with a mild roast char malt. There is a lower level of actual perceived bitterness which is nice in a Black IPA. Does not pile on to the roast malts giving that acrid sharpness. The alcohol is completely disguised and overall the beer is really well balanced. Pretty solid brew.

M: Body is moderate to light with a nice consistent texture from the carbonation. Finishes out a touch dry with a fairly clean exit.

D: Very nice balance for a Black IPA with a nice big piney hop presence and light charcoal roast character. Smooth and drinkable.
One of the better offerings from the day.

On tap at Wiens Brewing Company in Temecula, CA.

Pours a clear super dark brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. A foamy curtain of lace coats the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, and citrus zest aromas. Taste is much the same with citrus zest and cocoa flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with some solid aromas and flavors.
