330ml bottle from Gilimart, Gili T, Lombok (Rp 40,000):
A bright, golden amber beer with a clear body & a half centimetre, bubbly white head that's a little frothy on top. There is a lot of mango on the nose initially as you would expect & its surprisingly fresh too with some apricot & subtle tropical fruits following on behind. A few sugars showed in the early going & it was generally quite a sweet smelling beer. The mango carried on to the taste & it seemed more like a fruit juice at this point with a thick feel & relatively low carbonation levels. It's again quite sweet with some background fruits & sugars coming through but it was definitely something different & interesting to boot; easily one of the better beers that I managed to try in Indonesia.

330ml brown glass bottle from Beer&Co in Bali for 30000 rupiah.

Mango ale. +/- 4.97% ABV.

AROMA: Fresh mango, and it's genuine at that; not the fake mango extract aroma I expected, and the sweetness seems perfect. Pale malts. Fresh apricot. As fruity as they come, though not tart.

Aromatic intensity is moderate.

TASTE: Unfortunately, the flavour is indeed a bit artificial...not fake mango extract per se, but possibly mango puree. And it is too sweet. Almost an alcopop-like flavour profile...shame, I was getting excited there.

TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, unrefreshing, slightly sticky. Light-bodied.

OVERALL: Good premise; poor execution. This Indonesian brew does offer a different flavour than that of the ubiquitous fizzy pale lagers, but the balance just isn't there, and the eponymous fruit is neither authentic nor expressive.
