Matte black with a tan, moderately tall foam head that slowly settles to a thick khaki collar.
At first attractive on the nose, well...somewhat, it then becomes medicinal with an acrid sharpness on the palate, finishing quite dry and hot.
A harsh reality made more stark in the presence of such good company at Funk Factory's Great Taste pre-party.

12oz can
canned on 4/13/2022
L: dark brown body; creamy khaki head hangs around for awhile
S: strawberry aroma fills the room; closer inspection hints at strawberries & cream, vanilla, cocoa, Neapolitan ice cream; faint roasted barley
T: sweet & creamy Neapolitan ice cream; chocolate, vanilla, strawberry; roasted barley, leafy/earthy hops, bitter cocoa
F: full body, sticky sweet, alcohol well concealed, sweet finish with some astringency
O: this one sneaks up on you at 12.5%; sweet yet bitter; good Neapolitan ice cream flavors

3 sips and poured rest of can down the drain. Tasted like bad chemicals.

Served from the can in a Lagunitas mason jar.
Pours a deep obsidian topped by a finger of dirty sandstone foam. As I cracked the can prior to the pour (...I mean, obviously...), I got a rush of Neapolitan ice cream, the lid freshly pulled from the thoroughly-frozen container. Even that chilled scent comes through somehow, it's downright impressive. If only such glowing compliments continued as things hit the tongue: the compositional elements of a Neapolitan-based stout are there, with some cocoa nibs, some vanilla bean, and some strawberry notes, all couched in a sweet, almost mocha-like roast blanket, but none of the bits work either together or apart. I found the cocoa to be bitter, the vanilla astringent, and the strawberry sharp and old, with a twinge of artificiality; and they all clash harshly on the tongue, producing a strangely bitter and cacophonous mélange. The body is decidedly hefty, with a light moderate carbonation and a fairly chewy feel. Everything works about this stout aside from the flavors, which is a slight problem, I should think.
