I liked Known Gnome (now retired), but we should be interested in how that idea/line re-emerges as Grown.
I'm Looking at a barely above average porter (but, this is not a pretty style.) I'm Smelling a nuanced porter (this goes beyond the porter's blend of the stale ale and more new.) Only in the Taste do the roots become apparent (Off Color says there are three roots and -- very familiar with their genius -- I accept the three without discerning them individually.) But the real point is that the roots are an innovative way to get the same taste of the traditional porter's blending of new and stale. Finishing, this innovation balances the sweet salivary stimulant with a drying sensation; an exquisite finish to the day, which was less than good. I like very much how Grown Gnome sits in my mouth.
As to how it continues or breaks from the lineage of Known Gnome... The obvious differences are the roots and the 1/3 bump in ABV. Other than that, I defer and reissue my opinion of Off Color. They are now my favorite American crafter; having some 54 uniques on BA. I mostly think of them as Chicago's best producer of Belgian-inspired table ales. But for them to produce such a subtly innovative porter, it just reminds of how talented Off Color is.

16oz can. Poured out a jet-black color with a small, light brown head of foam. It smelled of licorice, chocolate, toffee and toasted caramel. Sweet chocolate taste with notes of bitter licorice and coffee.
