Just released today at Mousetrap. I am glad to add Terpex for several reasons, but explain two now.
First, I've had all seven (or eight) in the Predator series. And despite not liking the name, I've liked all of the saisons. In my book of gentle criticism, the Predator series is based on Off Color's genius stroke -- possibly a mistake -- of letting a flexible yeast do its thing chilled.
Second.... UnTappd styles Terpex as a "Farmhouse other." But I find BA is a good venue to say that "other" is OK to acknowledge that the saison can include other ingredients beyond the multi-grains found in Belgium. And Terpex's terpenes certainly qualifies as an "other" ingredient. But, it is a flavoring. Yet what makes the saison such a beautiful table ale is it encourages grains other than barley and requires a yeast that also is more flexible than those used to stimulate just barley. I note that Terpex has the same grains listed as Apex Predator. Since I should not fuss about "other", I will move on having made this point: that multi-grains are the heart of the saison, not its flavoring additives. I am glad I can style this as a "saison" and not a "farmhouse other."
That said... what to make of Terpex? I say one thing: Go get it before it is gone. It is unique.
Comparisons to Apex can get tedious. (I just proved tedium -- didn't I -- in my discussion of "other" farmhouse ales?) So, I will try to stay on point. But if you want to store-up the refreshment of a great grapefruit radler so you have it when it is most needed in the summer, then go get Terpex before it is gone.
I've said quite enough and am glad to read the review of others as they drink Terpex. Just do one thing for yourself: go get Terpex before it is gone.
5/15 Three weeks later, no one has take my advice to go get Terpex... or at least they haven't reviewed it and let me off the hook. But as the base saison of Apex (which I have had at least three times as many times as the next saison, Dupont), Terpex is an experiment fine enough. And I am keeping count at UnTappd.
