Notes:
A Flanders-style Brown Ale aged in oak barrels with wild yeast.
We stashed some Biere de Garde in these Wild Turkey barrels filled with DinoSmores in 2018 and released in 2020, then refilled them from our Fox in the Snow Barolo foedre for Pomegranate Fox in the Snow which inoculated the wood with the great, great grand microflora of Whiskers from 2015. So really we have been working on this beer for 7 years now.
The extended aging provided an apple cider vinegar brightness well balanced with tart cherry oxidation. Some of the chocolate chewiness remains to add a malty depth while the tannic backbone and tongue tingling effervescent dry out the finish leave you pondering if you can drink the entire 750 mLs yourself even though you said you'd share.

Only released a month ago and probably will only be available at Mousetrap. This specialty is styled on UnTappd as a Belgian Brown Ale. I agree more with the BA styling as Cat's Away has the tartness and the skillful barrel aging of the Oud. But I'd be surprised if you can find any brewer in Flanders who used these barrels as Off Color did. A whole lot experimenting that ended up with Cat's... and they got it done. (See the writeup on Mousetrap's tap list or the Notes below.)
Bottom-line: a complex tart. And while Off Color's humor can be over my head, I think I got this joke. As for my high Overall rating... no mystery that Off Color is my favorite brewer on the planet and Cat's is my 91st unique... quite a few for someone who will soon be a septuagenarian who deceives himself that he can still hang with you kids. So many brews, so little time.

Pours a dark brownish orange, ample foam and lasting surface coverage. Spotty flecks of lace, collar of lacing around the edges.
Madeira and aged orange wine aromas, lightly woody with some oxidation, though it works with the flavor profile.
Grapefruity taste, apple butter, woody and funky. Pretty interesting, fairly sour with a tannic bitterness from the Barolo foeder. Dried orange, peel and all. Medium bodied and smooth, very unique, not really a traditional Oud Bruin but a very enjoyable one-off barrel experiment.
Thanks to Thomas & Jenny for this one!
