Beer for Buddies achieves an aromatically dominant fruit profile of passionfruit, mango, papaya, pear, and nectarine with a mixed fermentation of natural brewers yeast to release more aromas from the malt and hops during fermentation. The base golden ale is light in body to showcase the fruit character with no more than a hint of malt sweetness and a touch of pine on the finish.

A tropical fruit medley. This is like what other beer of theirs? Easy answer: Apex Predator. OCB's flagship, cash cow and lucky mistake of a cold ferment was brewed into a recipe for the most successful (or at least prolific) saison line imaginable for a North American ten year old micro. With Buddies, I see Apex's saison line has crossed easily into similar styles. Buddies also uses the "Beer For ___" line to enhance marketing and humor. Smart moves all round.

This first copy of Buddies doesn't get an in-depth review. That will come as I just bought a 4-pack from Mousetrap. But upon reflecting about why Buddies initially reminds me of my favorite beer on the planet (Apex, if you're guessing), I thought I'd share an insight (instead of hurried review.) Trying to find commonality with Buddies and Apex and Juicy 3Cs (and without a lot of research), I'd guess OCB's second secret is this formula for the malt bill: a big component pale, one component soft (usually flaked wheat or oats); one element sweet-ish, sorghum in Buddies' case.

So my time is up for this can. What do you think of that hypothesis?

10/27/23 No response to my hypothesis ! Ok, be like that. I'll withhold my Buddies review until I at least get even a modest critique. I will say this about Buddies: it competes at my table of standard summer fare (tonight was basil pesto on spinach ravioli.) Cuts through the olive oil like a champ and lets the food's herbs have their say. Have I finally got a new Buddy amongst you guys ?
