A lighter, pale Trappist-style ale, Golden Boy starts with aromas of stone fruit and that traditional Belgian character. The continental pilsner malt shines through and finishes with a natural, gentle spiciness from the yeast. The finish is fairly crisp, but the flavours given by the Trappist yeast build as the beer warms.

500 mL bottle picked up at the brewery; served slightly chilled.

Pours a foggy golden-yellow hue, capped off with one finger of loose, frothy white head. It recedes quickly over the next minute or two; in its wake, a narrow, foamy collar remains, in addition to a wispy film on the surface. The aroma consists of a mixture of grainy malts, Belgian yeast and candi sugar sweetness, along with a good range of fruity flavours - including red apple, pear and apricot, with suggestions of sultana raisin, citrus, and perhaps a touch of banana.

Not bad at all - the flavour profile is well-balanced, subtle and quite approachable. Grainy, doughy malts and candi sugar start things off, with the orchard fruit flavours coming to dominate by mid-sip. Apricot is more prominent here than on the nose, with apple, pear and raisin also retaining a notable presence. Towards the finish, light hints of floral hops and citrus make themselves known, and finally ending with a yeasty note of peppery spice and clove. Medium-bodied, with moderate carbonation levels that gently prickle the palate, providing a relatively crisp, refreshing mouthfeel. This is a pretty spot-on interpretation of the style flavour-wise, though a bit more carb might be warranted. Very quaffable; I could definitely knock back a few of these bottles over the course of an evening, without tiring of it.

Final Grade: 3.79, a B+. If there's one thing I love more than vague Seinfeld references, it's well-made Belgian-style pale ales. Golden Boy handily qualifies in both categories - and even though it lacks the impressive, mouth-watering appearance of certain imported Belgian golden ales, I am still pretty satisfied with this one, as it manages to provide everything else I tend to expect from this style. Golden Boy is a reliable, understated sort of beer - not likely to amaze many beer geeks, but still perfectly serviceable for what it is. I like it, and I'll probably buy more.
