An English-style stout with a fuller and creamier body than other commercial dry stouts. The dark grains combine with a light malt sweetness to give the impression of chocolate or coffee, though all of these flavours come from the barley itself. Jet black with a persistant tan head, this 5.3% ABV beer gives you all the flavour you expect from a proper stout, with a gentle sweetness to balance the assertive roast.

Very nice stout. Nicely thick for an English stout, with big roasted flavours and some dark fruit (plum). Very flavourful for a non-imperial stout. Impressive.

500 mL bottle picked up at the brewery; 'bottled in 2014' on the label. If their coffee porter was any indication, this one should be right up my alley. Served slightly chilled.
This one pours a dark, brownish-black colour, equipped with some crimson highlights around the edges. A half-finger of soapy, tan-coloured froth is produced at the surface, but it dissipates rapidly over the next minute or two. Its only remnants are a bubbly collar and a few smudges of lace, along with a wispy film at the surface. The aroma is pretty typical of this style, with the roasted malts allowed to run roughshod over most of the other features. Milk chocolate is the big one, with notions of toasted hazelnut and mocha coffee. Mildly earthy; not all that interesting, but approachable.
This is a pretty yummy little stout. Toffee and molasses sweetness underlie plenty of roasted malt flavour - cocoa, baker's chocolate and rich, dark coffee all stand out, with hints of roasted nuts and perhaps a smidge of raisin. Earthy, black coffee bitterness begins to take over at the finish. A slight chocolate/molasses sweetness also briefly joins in, once you reach the aftertaste - however, it is moreso the astringent roasted malt notes of burnt coffee that voraciously cling to the palate after each sip. Medium in body, with relatively low carbonation levels that gently agitate the tongue - this is a silky-smooth, extremely drinkable beer that I have no real complaints about.
Final Grade: 3.88, a B+. Forked River's Blackbeerd is a perfectly serviceable English-styled stout - reasonably light and sessionable, but still quite flavourful - all-around just a pleasurable beer to drink. This would make an exceptionally good introduction to the style, as it is the very definition of a basic, quality, no-nonsense stout. I still prefer their Full City Porter over this, but Blackbeerd is totally a worthy brew that I will be drinking more of in the future. Worth a pick-up if you're stopping by the brewery in London.
