Wicked Wench is our English stout (Blackbeerd) that has seen only the inside of whisky barrels for almost a year. With colour as dark as a moonless night, and a roasty texture to match, this beer may sneak up on you. A tartness blends with the oak and is tempered with the rich body to make this a beer unlike anything you've probably tried before.

Had a 8.6oz sample for around $8.00 or so. Served in a wine glass
A- Pours a nice small head that is a bit airy. Very dark almost black colour
S- Has a sour note to it along with bourbon
T- Sour and bourbon. The bourbon is subdued but the sour is right there. Very unusual to say the least. Hits you bottom of the mouth and gets better as it warms
M- Almost a pucker on this brew. Very enjoyable
O- I like this unexpected brew. Very enjoyable and will buy again if I see it
Food Pairing
This nice little brew would go very well with....... Chocolate cake!
Enjoy

500 mL bottle from the brewery; served slightly chilled.
Inky black; an aggressive pour produced a full finger of bubbly, soapy, light tan-coloured head that faded away steadily over the next two minutes. A foamy collar survives, along with a minimal amount of lace - looks fine, but the aroma is where my interest became piqued. Chocolatey roasted malts and treacle sweetness underlie fruity notes of raisin, currant and tart cherry. There's also an undercurrent of vanilla throughout the nose, with subtle suggestions of oak.
Wow this is a neat beer - the sourness hits you right off the bat, but it comes off as more of a fruity sourness rather than a funky or vinegary one (as TDotScott astutely pointed out). Cherry comes to mind, and maybe chocolate-covered raspberry; this stripe of tartness interacts beautifully with the roasty, chocolate-like malt flavours. I'm also getting some molasses, hazelnut and raisin, with hints of vanilla. Roasty, astringent finish with mild oak/wood tannin and a weak touch of bourbon, with a dry aftertaste. Light-medium in body, with low carbonation levels and a smooth, but slightly flat mouthfeel. It's not a big problem, and I understand why it's like that, but it's the only knock I can come up with anyhow. Extremely quaffable and genuinely interesting.
Final Grade: 4.13, an excellent A-. I wasn't expecting too much from Forked River's Wicked Wench - I've never had a soured stout before, and frankly the idea of combining sourness with roasted malts has never appealed to me that much. I should know better than to submit to my own preconceptions by now. The truth is, this is a superbly drinkable beer that I would purchase by the case... if it weren't like 7 bucks a bottle. And again, I understand why it's like that, and will consider picking up a few more the next time I swing by London.

On tap at Volo, served into a wine glass
L- Dark brown with garnet edging. Not much head at all, but that's expected.
S- some vanilla barrel notes, but chocolate is the big player here. Not really funky, or perhaps the bacteria present themselves as a certain fruitiness (cherries?)
T- a big kick of acidity right up front, with a soft, almost schwartzbier-like roast flavor follows, and lots of chocolate. There might be some vanillins also. Not super funky, like I'm not getting much Brett, and definitely no acetobacter. Just clean lacto.
F- A slight prickle of carbonation. Really dry from the roast and the bugs, but not undrinkably dry, like in some other sour stouts.
O- not a bad offering from an unexpected brewery.
