The Black Watch, the oldest highland regiment in Canada, has served Canada and the Empire at home and abroad since 1862. Andrew's grandather served in the Lorne Scots regiment in WWII, and wore the same tartan proudly. We'll raise a glass to his grandfather and to the Lorne Scots Regiment on their 150th anniversary and toast them with Black Watch.
This porter has a gentle, chocolately roast character, a medium body, and just enough aftertaste to blend perfectly with your pub foods.

500 mL bottle picked up at the brewery in late April; served slightly chilled.
Pours an opaque, near-black mahogany-brown colour with some ruby red highlights. Just over one finger of light beige-coloured foam floats at the surface, steadily seeping off over the next couple of minutes into a creamy, denser-looking cap and collar. Decent lacing; a good-looking porter. Nothing too surprising on the nose - mostly roasted malt character, with hints of molasses, sponge toffee, cocoa powder and black coffee. Suggestions of vanilla, black cherry and ash.
A very respectable, classic English-style porter - no unnecessary adjuncts here, just good clean, roasted malt deliciousness. Treacle and toffee flavours provide underlying sweetness, with hints of plum and black cherry mingling in the background of the profile. Baker's chocolate and powdered cocoa start to come through on the back end as the roasted malts begin to take the reins for good. Finishes with light notes of mocha coffee and some earthy, dirty hop bitterness; weak suggestions of ash/woodsmoke followed by a bittersweet, lightly roasty aftertaste. Light-medium in body, with low carbonation levels that gently agitate the palate, resulting in a soft, smooth, nearly creamy mouthfeel. A satisfying and well-made porter, though not much of an attention-grabber.
Final Grade: 3.94, a well-earned B+. Forked River's Black Watch is a solid, serviceable beer that I would confidently recommend to fans of traditional English-style porters, stouts, or "dark ales" in general. It checks all of the boxes easily, but doesn't really exceed my expectations - which is not a knock against the beer itself. In fact, I'll certainly be buying more of this definitely-not-limited-edition porter in the future, because I'd like to compare it side-by-side to their Blackbeerd stout, in order to determine which one I prefer more.
