500 mL bottle from the brewery, served lightly chilled. This is the first entry in their new "Experimental IPA" series. The only previous experience I have with Loral hops was the 2016 Duvel Tripel Hop, which I quite enjoyed.

Pours a golden-blonde colour, clouded with tiny flecks of hop particulate and capped off with one finger of foamy white head. Within two minutes' time, it has been reduced to a bubbly film ringed by a modest collar, along with a continuous coat of lace which has been left clinging to the interior surface of the glass. Citrusy notes of mandarin orange and grapefruit dominate the fruity aroma, accompanied by lesser notes of apricot, floral hops, lychee and pineapple.

Not bad at all - an easy-drinking IPA, not at all a palate-exhauster. The malt backing is quite subdued, with only some coarse graininess and weak honey sweetness noted - but that's probably for the best, because it allows the various features of this novel hop to take the lead roles. Mandarin orange and tropical fruits come through, leading to an earthy, herbal, somewhat spicy finale that reminds me of certain noble hop strains. Earthy, leafy aftertaste that fades within a few seconds. Light-medium in body, with average carbonation levels which impart a good, crisp bite. Refreshing and highly drinkable for the style; downing a few bottles of this in a row would not be a challenge in the slightest. Indeed; I plowed through this bottle in about 20 minutes.

Final Grade: 3.85, a B+. Alpha Test Loral is a fine example of a "light" hopped ale - the selected hop strain manages to offer a range of interesting, approachable flavours, while the (relatively-speaking) low abv seriously aids its overall sessionability. Truth be told, I'm not a huge fan of Forked River's rotating IPAs, but this particular offering is one that I can fully get behind - so hopefully they'll bring it back at some point, instead of leaving it as a one-off. I wonder which hop they'll select for the beta test?
