500 mL bottle purchased at the brewery earlier this year - in the spring, I'm pretty sure, and it has been sitting in the cellar ever since. Served barely chilled.

Pours mostly-clear, with a sunny golden-yellow hue and one finger of loose, bubbly white head situated atop. It fizzles off within sixty seconds or so, leaving behind a thin, foamy collar and a patchy film on the surface. Subtle and muted on the nose, with hints of green apple, lemon candy and lactic acidity funk; perhaps just a touch of grassy hay and silage.

Not bad at all; no signs of oxidation, even though this bottle is (at minimum) 7-8 months old. The flavour profile is straightforward, as Berliners tend to be - moderate lactic acid sourness is a continuous presence, with gritty, grainy wheat husk, lemon rind and grassy hops rounding out the rest. Sour on the tail end, lingering on the palate for a second or two after each sip, followed by a dry aftertaste. Light in body, with assertive carbonation that prickles and bites and scrubs the palate. Crisp texture, with high drinkability - a valuable trait, as sessionable sours are not easy to come by in these parts.

Final Grade: 3.8, a B+. Forked River's Ich Bin Ein Berliner is not just a strong effort - it's also further evidence that these guys are continuing to improve and refine their sours. With only a handful of other SW Ontario brewers even bothering to attempt these sorts of styles, it's great to know that there's a brewery right next door in London that can pump out worthy interpretations. If another batch is released, I'll be sure to pick up another bottle (and drink it fresh) for comparative purposes. I'm also curious to know which hop strains it was dry-hopped with.
