500 mL bottle picked up at the brewery in mid-May; dated Apr 11 2017 and served well chilled. This beer was a collaborative project between Forked River and one of Wellington's brewers, the prolific George Eagleson.
Pours a foggy golden-orange colour, with nearly an inch of frothy white head quickly diminishing to a wide, bubbly collar of foam surrounding a filmy cap. A respectable quantity of lace is produced; looks like your standard English-style pale ale to me. On the nose, I am picking up grainy pale malts and some doughy, biscuity notes, as well as low-key toffee sweetness and subtly leafy, earthy hops.
Drinks like a (light-ish) traditional bitter, with grainy pale malts, lightly toasted bread/biscuits and a restrained note of toffee and butterscotch sweetness coming through on the forefront. Mild-mannered English hop flavours show up towards the finish, imparting an earthy, tea-leafy bitterness that cuts right through the maltiness, culminating with a lightly bittersweet aftertaste that lasts for only a second or two. Clean and off-dry. Light in body, with moderately assertive carbonation that results in a crisp, firm bite felt on the surface of the palate with each sip. Ridiculously sessionable.
Final Grade: 3.86, a B+. King George's Mild is undoubtedly a pleasant brew to sip (or gulp) back - it's decidedly English in character, and thus likely to appeal to fans of bitters, EPAs and the like. An excellent substitute for the exported British fare that I usually favour when picking from those overlapping styles. I don't know if I'd go out of my way for more of this, but I'm glad I had the wherewithal to pick up two bottles while they were available, and would grab more if the opportunity presented itself.
