500 mL bottle from the brewery; dated May 9 2017 and served well-chilled.

Pours a hazy golden-orange colour, with one finger of soapy white head slowly being reduced to a cm-thick cap of bubbly foam, ringed by a thick, creamy collar. Some nice lacing is also generated; the beer is fine from a visual standpoint. I'm getting pineapple and mango on the nose, together with orange citrus, apricot and hints of pine needles. It's a lightly juicy, appealing aroma that seems appropriate for a NE IPA.

A reasonably good IPA with a fairly low-key flavour - it's certainly not aggressively bitter for the style, but it's also not as juicy or fruity as I was initially hoping. That being said, there's still a pleasant mixture of flavours that include orange, stone fruit and honeydew melon, as well as hints of pineapple juice, mango, and grainy pale malt sweetness. The bitterness of the hops begins to assert itself on the back end, providing a moderate amount of earthy, resiny bitterness and some floral undertones. These don't linger long, however, as the aftertaste defaults to a light, juicy note that swiftly fades. Medium-light body with mild carbonation; it does manage to achieve that soft, fulfilling, almost-creamy texture, which is one of the major draws of this sub-style. Very easy to knock back, with its modest abv, juicy flavours and smooth mouthfeel.

Final Grade: 3.94, a B+. Forked River's Catch 23 Northeast Style IPA is pretty darn good, but I'm hesitant to throw out descriptors such as 'great' or 'amazing'. The foundation and scaffolding of a quality IPA are present, no doubt - but I still feel that the intensity of the juicy hop flavours could stand to be increased somewhat. One thing I will say is that I do think it's one of this brewery's better IPAs overall - the drinkability is fantastic, though obviously the abv is a bit too strong to make this an outright session brew. Just amp up those tropical/stone fruit flavours a lil'bit, and rest assured I'd be buying this one every time I stop by the brewery in London. As-is, it's still totally worth a look, but not necessarily a must-try.
