473 mL can from the LCBO; dated Jan 17 2018 and served barely chilled. I have every reason to believe that this is a re-brand of their Catch 23.
Pours foggy golden-amber, with nearly a finger of loose, soapy white head rising to the surface; it recedes steadily within the next few minutes, with a smooth, even coat of lacing applied in its wake. Looks fine, but the aroma is of much more interest to me - I'm getting pineapple, mango, strawberry-kiwi juice, orange and canned peaches in syrup, as well as a hint of cotton candy and pine resin. An eclectic mix for sure, but it's damn appealing.
Not bad - the 'punch' part of the name is spot on. Grainy pale malts and caramelized sugar sweetness are obscured by the smoothie blend of fruity hop flavours that come through one after another - peach and apricot, cantaloupe, pineapple and mango. Earthy pine resin and dank, floral hop bitterness rise to prominence towards the finish, but fail to linger into the aftertaste for long, outlasted by hints of tropical fruit. Light-medium in body, with low carbonation and a soft, smooth mouthfeel that is about what I've come to expect from this sub-style.
Final Grade: 3.98, a B+. Forked River's Knockout Punch is a quality IPA for sure, though the bitterness on the back end sticks out a bit more than I'd like from the Northeast style - not that it's anything that a seasoned hophead wouldn't be able to cope with. On the plus side, the juiciness is getting there, and overall I'd have to say that this is probably Forked River's best straight-up IPA to date. I'd pick it up again, and I'd say they should strongly consider getting this one into LCBOs across SW Ontario.
