473 mL can from the brewery; packaged Dec 6 2017 and served slightly chilled. Reviewed from notes.
Pours a cloudy orange-amber colour, with nearly two fingers of off-white foam situated atop. It holds together for the better part of five minutes, coating the glass with an attractive doily pattern of lace as it seeps away; a bubbly film and thin collar also survive. Smells of caramelized malts and spicy rye bread, with strong showings of orange, grapefruit and pine resin. Hints of apricot and floral hops also come through.
The flavours are along the same lines as the aroma, with caramel sweetness, bready malts and rye grain leading the way ahead of orange, grapefruit and muddled stone fruit. The hops rise to prominence on the back end, with pine resin and floral, earthy bitterness accented by a spicy rye bread finish. Lingering hints of resin and citrus pith in the aftertaste, as well as a touch of ethanol. Medium in body with moderately low carbonation that provides a slight bite.
Final Grade: 3.82, a B+. Forked River's Double Riptide is a more than serviceable brew that I wouldn't mind returning to again. The rye character gives it a more malty backbone than most of the IPAs I've had lately, but there's enough hops in there to complete the experience properly. Better than the original Riptide IMO, and a good rye beer worth taking a flyer on.
