Fortified by extra hops and alcohol to withstand the journey by ship from England, India Pale Ales were some of the first to explore the flavor and aroma of hops over malt. Imperial IPA's are typically brewed with significant amounts of hops to showcase hop bitterness, flavor, and aroma.
Ten Ninety Imperial IPA explores resinous hops and rich barley in perfect harmony. Three bold hop varieties lend grapefruit, orange, pine, and pepper flavors that are steadied by a firm backbone of rich malted barley with deep chestnut and toffee aspects.

Incredibly well balanced. I almost couldn't even taste the hops through all of the delicious malt flavor.
Caramel malts up front, followed by the heavy citrus hops. Delicious.

On draft at Gino's East, Chicago.
Poured a dark copper hue with a two finger foamy white head. There was good retention and lacing.
The smell featured an earthy burnt caramel and herbal hop.
The taste consisted of a full caramel malt and secondary herbal hop.
The mouthfeel was full for the style.
Overall a decent malt drive IPA.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours hazy dark orange/amber color with a 1 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big grapefruit, tangerine, mango, peach, pineapple, lemon, orange peel, light pine, floral, grass, caramel, toffee, toasted bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/tropical hops and moderate dark/bready malt sweetness; with great strength. Taste of big grapefruit, tangerine, mango, peach, pineapple, lemon, orange peel, light pine, floral, grass, caramel, toffee, toasted bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Fair amount of pine/grassy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, mango, peach, lemon/orange zest, caramel, toffee, toasted bread, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity and robustness of citrus/tropical hops and balanced dark/bready malt sweetness; with a good malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very smooth, creamy, and lightly slick/sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice DIPA. All around good balance, robustness, and complexity of citrus/tropical hops and dark/bready malt sweetness; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.
