Dark orange becoming a murky iced tea tone as the full can is poured. Visible micro sediment in suspension.

Smells like a 90’s pale ale, orange peel and caramel malt.

Taste is similar, caramel malt and orange peel bitterness. Weird. Feels off, there’s an astringent twang there that’s out of place. Fairly hoppy and bitter.

Medium bodied, a little flabby for the style. Not sure if this was old stock at the distributor, but it was a new arrival at the shop. Undated can. Pretty terrible for a Festbier, and subpar as an APA. They can make a good lager (1916 pilsner), not sure what happened with this one.

Found this one on sale (late in the season) at a local retailer. I thought this brewery used to be more local than its current address, so I wanted to try it. Looks like it's a little further away than it once was.

16 ounce can poured into my tall Becher. No visible dating on the can label.

L -- Clear, deep golden color with a firm, white head that holds up well.

S -- Good balance of bready malts and spicy noble hops.

T -- Sweetish, bready malts up front followed by herbal, bitter hops. The spicy, bitter hops linger through the aftertaste and finish, but don't overwhelm because the malts do a good job of balancing. In fact, the hops do a good job of keeping the malts from being too sweet.

F -- Mouthfeel is soft to slightly syrupy with a medium body and very dry finish.

O -- I honestly expected this to be a typical Ami take on a Festbier; hopped out of control and no good bready malts. It's definitely hoppier than a Bavarian Festbier, but the hops are controlled and of the noble variety, so it redeems its heritage. To that, I have to wonder if this shouldn't be considered more of an Imperial Pilsner than a Festbier.
