Kirchwerder 11/5 2024. 33 cl bottle from Rewe, Europa Passage, Hamburg. A mermaid painted in broad black strokes on the off-white label. As Altes Mädchen Zwikel.
Pours slightly unclear golden yellow with a mid-sized white head. Stable. Settles as thin layer of foam just covering the surface of the beer. Moderate lacing.
Aroma is fairly intense with a sweet malty odor mingling with s sharp scent of citrus and grass. Sweet Toasted malts, toffee and caramel. Lemon.
Light carbonation. Slightly thick, oily, soft, smooth, almost flat texture.
Flavor is medium intense with a medium strong sweetness followed by a slightly stronger bitterness. Aftertaste is bitter with a sweet toffee undertone. Lingers for a bit.
Toasted take on a Zwikel.

250ml pour at the brewery.
Pours mostly clear, light gold, 1cm medium-density head, lots of visible carbonation. Smell is bright -- lemon and grass, some honeysuckle and yeast. Taste is good, but way hoppier than I expected. Screaming lemon zest. Lots of grass. Moderate+ grain presence in the background. Mouthfeel is very clean and dry, definite cotton-mouthiness. Overall, it's tasty, but definitely not what I was expecting.

Dirty gold color and clear. Small starting head which settles to rim bubbles and a thin film. Extensive fine spots throughout the tasting.
White bread toast aroma with a touch of caramel or honey. Floral hop in the background.
Smooth neutral body with an expected level of carbonation. Caramel base flavor. The hop provides a good balance and the decent length aftertaste.
