Pours dark brown almost black. Thick creamy tan head. Smells maple syrup. Taste maple syrup sweet, cookie dough, vanilla, alcohol hit drys the finish. No hint of hops aroma, flavor or bitterness. Overall, big brown malty sweet ale with no hint of hops. It’s what’s for breakfast.

Thanks to Jarnet87 for sending this bottle! Reviewed from notes. Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into an El Catador Barrel-Aged glass.

A: Well, up front - no "pfft" at all when the cap was removed. This may not be a good sign. Pours a nearly opaque dense brown - dark, but obviously brown rather than black-brown. No head formation, and minimal if any visible carbonation at all.

S: Amazing – maple syrup and big cinnamon, bready toasty malts. Nutmeg, lactose, and a creamy eggy bread in the glass becomes believable. All of this under the bourbon barrel with just a bit of oak tannins to dry it out. Superlative aroma.

T: Cinnamon, bourbon, and toasted bready malts. Vanilla and maple syrup. Nutmeg and oak dryness. It finishes with cinnamon and bourbon flavors that last.

M: Alcohol heat is apparent but stays modest. The mouthfeel seems a bit thin, but this is quite accentuated by the complete lack of carbonation in this bottle. Flat as water, not a hint of bubbles at all.

O: The smell is amazing, and the flavors are there. The carbonation issue kills this completely. I hope this is an isolated incident, but it ruined a very promising beer. Bummer. I’m more than happy to re-review if I ever have a chance to get another bottle.

Wow! Funky Buddha is just nailing it when it comes to getting spot on flavors into a beer. Bourbon, oak, maple, & cinnamon all melded together into a creamy brown ale! Just delicious!

Brown to Ruby brown and clear. No discernible head or lacing.

Nose is maple syrup, cinnamon, minor vanilla, and a bit of bourbon.

Taste is mild bourbon, cinnamon, mild vanilla, minor sweetness throughout, and oak.

Mouthful is medium and even. Carbonation is average to low. Finish is dry.

Compared to the regular version, I like this a touch better. The heavens hill barrel may not have been the best choice for bourbon, rye whiskey may have accented the spices better. At times this reminds me of Dr. Pepper. All that being said, the brown ale is a good choice for this beer. It's lighter and very drinkable. The nose is superb. The taste unfortunately is not as strong. By all means try this after trying the original.

I'm honestly surprised to see the score for this as low as it is (currently a 4.01), this personally one of my top 3 Funky Buddha beers, along with Love Below and either Last Buffalo/Morning Wood. It smells like the best breakfast imaginable, and while a bit sweet for some, to me it hits the nail on the head perfectly. Although I admittedly have a sweet tooth.

On draught in a snifter at the brewery. Looks like flat soda. Smells slightly sour and acidic but the base French Toast maple and cinnamon is definitely there. The acidic aroma is noticeable in the flavor but helps offset the sugary sweetness of the base beer. Mouth is typical Funky Buddha thin and sweet. Overall an enjoyable barrel aged adjunct brown ale. Not really worth $25 for a bomber, and nothing I'd seek out again though.

On tap 4/30 at Funky Buddha. Also had at 2016 MBCP day. Pours reddish brown with one finger of off white head. Smell is maple syrup and sweet malts. Taste is bourbon forward but the base beer and maple syrup cuts the alcohol for a smooth maple, bourbon, malty finish. Adds a nice layer of complexity to regular French Toast

On tap at Wakestock. Murky brown. Smells of maple and cinnamon. A little whiskey. Taste is all brown sugar and maple. Cinnamon in the back end. It has that eggy custard flavor somehow, too. Again, a little barrel, but not a ton. Medium body. Kinda boozy. Flavorful but not really something I’m enjoying.

Enjoyed at Funky Buddha's Maple Bacon Coffee Porter Day on 1/9/2016. Funky Buddha does a great job with the French Toast double brown incorporating the many flavors you associate with French Toast. The barrel aging with this beer is an added treat.
