Funky Buddha Pina Colada
12oz into a tulip
On tap at The Pour House Channelside
Consumed (and review written) Oct 2017

A: Pours a dark golden yellow, fairly large white head, good retention and tons of lacing. 4.5

S: Super sweet aroma, big pie crust, sugary sweet, some coconut but not a Ton. 4

T: Like the nose the taste is immensely sweet. Some coconut on the finish. Not overly complex as it's a sugar bomb but it's tasty. 4

M/D: Fuller side of medium body, a bit syrupy, drinkability is somewhat limited due to the sweetness. 3.5

O: Overall it's good. Pretty one dimensional and doesn't pull off the theme as well as some of the other FB beers, but I enjoyed it. 4

Nose and palate match: very sweet, with tones of coconut, cream, pineapple, and honey. Absolutely no indication of the >10% ABV, this could easily pass in the 6-8% range.

I've had a bunch of strange Funky Buddha concoctions. I certainly didn't expect to like an imperial cream ale shooting for pina colada flavors. This is really an excellent brew, albeit very much on the sweet side.

this is a crazy beer, and would almost fall into the category of gimmick or novelty if it were by any other brewery or had any other flavor profile, but these guys kill it with the far out flavored ales, and this is another clever one. a huge cream ale base, i think a nice drier format for a beer that leans towards being sweet. also light enough to showcase the added flavors without being too intense. this has pineapple and coconut added, and both come through pretty well in both the aroma and the flavor, although i think more coconut in the nose, and more pineapple in the flavor, which makes sense. the beer is sort of murky and doesnt have much head or visible carbonation, and i miss that element here, but just about everything else is right on. the pineapple is sweet, above the grain, and present from start to finish, which the coconut has a light nutty toasted vibe to it, and gives the beer some needed grounding. alcohol, for being as strong as it is, does not run away here, but it certainly makes itself known with all the juicy pineapple in the finish. hard to drink more than one of these, but also hard to see a beer like this on a menu and not order one. impressed with this, its about as good as such a thing could be, but might be a better overall beer if the alcohol was reduced by half and it was carbonated to high heaven as a summer refresher. still, this is cool. is this the same base beer is their jitterbug?
