This Porter was the base for MBCP and Last Snow that was brewed at the former Funky Buddha Lounge in Boca Raton, FL. I drank this beer many times and although it was somewhat inconsistent, when it was good, it was a world class Porter. Probably the best true to style Porter I’ve ever had. Subtle notes of semi sweet chocolate with a little bit of a bitter burnt coffee flavor in a very drinkable, slightly thin mouthfeel. To me this was the true and best brewing creation of Ryan Sentz who then added the famous adjuncts from coffee flavors of the local roaster in the area.

well made beer here, but awfully simple and straightforward as they go, especially from these guys. i almost find myself disappointed its not some absurd weirdo beer like so many of their others, but its nice to have something a bit more conservative in the lineup. this is tasty, but simple, and super light for anything being passed off as a porter, it looks far more like a brown ale than a porter, and honestly doesnt get nearly that deep on the grain front to be a porter in my book, but it tastes good, and its lightness makes sense with the florida climate. there may or may not be coffee in this beer too. it has that aroma for sure, along with some sweet cocoa and a little fresh tobacco, less of it in the flavor, but the bitterness and acidity seem to match, so it remains a mystery. lighter bodied as they go, especially if we call this porter, its drinkable by the pint, and fairly dry as it finishes. not quite under flavored, but it certainly is next to the rest of their lineup, and for being as well made as it is, seems still to me to be somewhat underwhelming overall. a worthy pint, serviceable but largely unexciting.

Dark ruby red brown, no visible carbonation, a half finger of light beige head.

Coffee, liquorice, tar.

Coffee, dark toasted malts, light sweetness and light bitterness, well rounded.

Medium body, medium carbonation. Great smooth mouth feel.

Really well rounded and makes me want to keep drinking it. Drank at the Boca Raton lounge.

Notes from 7/2012

Pours brown with a thin cap of tan head. Lots of chocolate in the aroma and the taste. Smell also contains roasted malt and a biscuity character. Chocolate is both milk chocolate and bittersweet. Has a slight chalkiness to it, maybe cocoa-y. Also a decent creamy coffee and vanilla presence. Very tasty, better than the aroma. Medium, slick creamy mouthfeel with a roasted bitter finish. Also some subtle hopping to counter the creamy and milk chocolate.

On tap at the Funky Buddha grand opening. Newly dubbed OP Porter. Served in an oversized snifter.

Appearance - Black with a nice khaki head. Good lacing and surface wisps. Retains well.

Smell - Nice roast. Chocolate. Mild lactose, but noticeable.

Taste - Sweet up front. Roasty dark chocolate. Lactose kicks in behind it. Mild roast and hop bitterness rounds it out. Lingering lactose sweetness.

Mouthfeel - Medium body. Well carbobated. Easy drinking porter.

Overall - I can't help that I don't love lactose. This does it well, though.

A: Pours very dark, some mahogany glints, mocha head, not very thick which fades quite quickly.
S: Nose of chocolate toasted malts and coffee.
T: Palate is on coffee, chocolate, molasses and vanilla sugar.
M: Medium bodied, carbonation is ok.
O: A classic porter, quite well done.

First had: on tap at Funky Buddha, Boca Raton, FL

Hmm. I'm not sure what went wrong with this one. It's highly rated, and a base beer for many FB brews, but there was definitely something amiss when I sampled it. I tried being as generous as I could here, but honestly, I couldn't even finish a sampler of this.

Dark brown-black pour, with a thin ring of off-white bubbles that didn't retain much but left a little lacing on the glass. Nose was on the sweeter side, aromas of yeast, nutty malts, thin cocoa. Taste was weird...almost lagerish, grainy bitterness, verging on vegetal, like strained veggie water, yeast, a bit of roasty malt character, but just strange and off-putting overall. Infected? Or maybe I got a bad pour? Not sure. Light-medium body. Whatever the problem with this was, I was definitely not going back for seconds.

On-tap at the brewpub.

Beer is dark brown, almost black. Has a small off-white head on top. with good lacing.

Smell contains lactose, roasted malt and a good amount of vanilla.

Taste is nice. Vanilla. roasted malt, milk chocolate, burnt caramel. Quite creamy. A bit of anise. Nice big flavour.

Full bodied, moderate to highly carbonated. Smooth under the carbonation, quite velvety.

Overall, really nice. A very good porter.

Served on tap in a shaker glass at the brewery.

A - jett black with a 2 finger tan frothy head with great retention and excellent lacing.

S - chocolate notes, with a touch of smoke, coffee, a bit of earthy

T - Coffee forward porter with great chocolate notes and early moderately bitter hops

M - Full body, moderately carbonated, chewy and smooth.

O - I thought this was one of their better standard brews.

A: This American Porter looks great. From the presentation alone, I would have thought this to be a nitro-tap (it's not). Plenty dark, with a whipped half finger head. The lacing and wide collar are impressive.

S: Melted milk chocolate and crushed graham cracker. I really love the fresh and fun nature of the bouquet.

T: Like a cold winter evening spent in...South Florida, as I get an immediate surge of hot chocolate. The mid is grassy, with shades of toast and a very mild char. The finish lingers, and reminds me a good bit of nutella crepes from vendors on the streets of Paris.

M: Well done and expertly put together. Reasonably dense yet it's in no way cloying. Highly drinkable, a beer I was able to return to with ease.

O: Hands down the best Funky Buddha brew I had while sitting at their lounge for about two hours. Of their year-round offerings, this is head and shoulders above the rest. If I recall correctly, I downed two pints of this with no problem, and easily could have put back another.

As the base beer of their Maple Bacon, this has plenty of potential for "toying with", as it's tasty as-is, yet impressionable enough to hold any number of flavor profiles. Thumbs up.

Pitch black pour into a pint glass with a mocha tan head. Silky texture and decent retention. Small lace patches randomly around the glass.

Cocoa powder covered cereal grains all the way. Also notes of roast malts, caramel and even vanillla sweets, brown sugar.

Has a big cocoa and vanilla interplay supported by roast malt, caramel, sweets, vanilla and some spicy dark fruit. Slight earthy herbal hops. Lactose is reminiscent of many milk stouts.

Creamy and silky moderately thick body with a slight roast bitterness. Good lactose smoothness.

Lactose porter with good chocolate and vanilla notes makes me think of a delicious dessert.

Arrives in a standard pint glass, dark and brooding with less than a full finger of head capping it.
Smell is rich with roasted malt and vanilla, with lesser notes of chocolate and brown sugar.
Taste is smooth and rich with strong notes of vanilla, brown sugar for sweetness, roasted malt and a light coffee note.
Rich and full-bodied, smooth with a very light effervescence. No hint at ABV. A light coating of the tongue a palate. This must be what they used as a base for Last Snow. An amazingly good beer.

A-Pour is a dark brown with a thin mocha head and a hint of lacing.

S-very nice roast. GOod chocolate notes to go with the coffee.

T-roasty, nice sweetness to balance

M-medium bodied, tasty.

O-a very nice beer. I enjoyed this.

Draught pour into my imperial snifter on open mic night.

Dark brown elixir, thin tan head, minimal lacing.

Nice coffee, chocolate, burnt malt with a hint of sweet toffee and caramel.

Well balanced with a nice hop flavor steadied by the cocoa and malt. Not overly sweet thanks to the hops.

Well carbonated, thin mouthfeel as expected from a porter.

Nice representation.

Nice deep amber brown colar - little head.
Caramel vanilla aroma.
Coffee chocolate vanilla taste. Mild and enjoyable. Really easy drinker and smooth to boot not heavy at all but very drinkable.
I'd buy again...on tap as there are better porters out there.

32oz medicine growler thanks to Diego! Poured into a tulip.

A - Pours a darker brown color, cream-colored head, thin ring.

S - Roast, toasted nuts, and a lot of fruity notes (?)...hmm, interesting. Not sure what I think of the nose with the fruit...needs a bit more chocolate and roast for me.

T - More fruity sweetness, light roast, burnt sugars, woody. Not really digging this one all too much, not my idea of a Porter. Could this batch be infected?

M - Light body (a bit too thin), good carbonation, creamy finish.

O - Not my cup 'o tea, but hey, can't win 'em all. Would like to try again in the future to see if the fruity notes (infection?) I experienced were a mistake. Not that great of a take on the style, IMO.

Thanks to stakem for sharing this 'growler' with me. Poured chilled into a willybecker.

A deep murky dark medium brown with some sediment evident, thin light tan cap w/ tiny bead and no lace. The smell is mostly roasted malt with a earthy aspect that comes off as slightly raisiny -could be dark crystal malt with some fruit sweetness in the aroma. The feel is roasted and dry with mild spice tinges and slight sweet edge w/ a medium body and low alcohol in th feel with mild char in the background.

The taste is very high in roast and there are mild tinges of char from highly kilned malt but the bitter grain impact is kept low with a mildly astringent tinge and moderate sweetness adds a touch of balance with mild coffee-like flavor and light yeasty tinge which gives the impression of dried fruit in the taste. This is an overall decent beer, nothing outstanding in my opinion and a few flavors I don't expect to see in a porter which is why I rated it accordingly, but I enjoyed it with some nice yeast and roasted malt in the taste.

Thanks to DosBeerigos for the growler. Poured into a snifter, this brew appears black in color with a finger and a half of light tan head. As it slowly fades, it leaves a wall of lacing effect sticking to the glass. When held to the light, it displays some lighter brown clarity around the edges and a bit of a light ruby clarity through the main part of the body. A light swirl revives a finger of fizzy head that again quickly dissolves. Taking a closer look at the glass, small chunks of dark brown yeast float around in suspension and come to rest collecting at the bottom of my glass. I'd expect this maybe from the last pour of a bottle conditioned brew but from the first pour of a growler? I've never seen such a thing before.

The smell of this brew is nutty somewhat like hazelnut mixed with a strong yeasty character and tangy alcohol. Minerals run throughout with a light amount of citrus and herbal hops. The roasty grain inclusion mixed with some other earthy notes somewhat like coffee. There is a bit of a veggie aspect that comes forward as it warms up.

The taste is roasty with a bitter grain flavoring and a hint of coffee/nutty grain aspects. A bit of a citrus component is evident which is reminiscent of fresh coffee beans more-so than hops. There is a solid green yeasty component throughout the flavor profile which really exaggerates a tangy alcohol flavoring which is a bit off-putting and seems like this is on its way to full blown infection with a solid sour twangy mess and hints of lacto. It has an aftertaste lightly veggie-like mixed with some hints of stale to musty grain with a bit of bitter semi-chocolate character.

This is a medium bodied roasty brew with a modest level of carbonation. The feel is medium to light and has a low alcohol impact for the most part. Once the brew comes up to temperature, it starts to have a warmth down the back of the throat. Overall its a decent attempt at the style but something has gone horribly wrong. I had the vanilla espresso version of this brew and was completely blown away by how awesome it was. This was not enjoyable at all compared to that version.

A - Pours a dark brown with a fwo finger dark tan head. Good retention and lots of lacing is left on the glass.

S - Nutty and strong coffee.

T - Same as the smell, smooth and a touch of vanilla in the background.

D - Good carbonation and average body.

O - Smooth and just right for a porter.

Appearance: Arrives with a fudge brown color and a creamy top that curtains the pint glass

Smell: Roasty, with black bread, coffee and chocolate tones

Taste: Coffee, chocolate and black bread elements combine, up front, to create a mocha flavor; the finish provided a roasty contrast, though there is still some underlying sweetness

Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied with moderate carbonation

Overall: The first time I had this beer I felt that it was too sweet but I tried it again in Nov of 2011 and liked it much better; obviously, there is variability from batch to batch, but the cloying sweetness was gone and the balance was much better (re-calibrated the numbers to reflect my second experience)

Smells of roasted malt with a slightly burnt characteristic to it. Mild chocolate and coffee notes.

Roasty malt dominate the flavor with a charred/burnt flavor, chocolate and espresso

medium bodied with good carbonation

This is a very good beer will definitely look to this one once the weather cools again

Pours black with a light brown head that leaves decent lacing.

Smells of smooth roasted malts with moderate amounts of coffee aromas. Also present are light semi-sweet chocolate aromas and hints of char.

Tastes very similar to how it smells. Robust roasted malts up front are joined quickly by smooth coffee flavors. Midway through, mildly bitter semi-sweet chocolate flavors come into play, carrying through to a moderately bitter ending. Mouthfeel is good, with solid carbonation.

Overall this is a very good beer and I see why the brewery chose it for so many treatments. Very much worth a shot.

Had yesterday at the brewpub. Review from notes. Received in a pint-like glass.

3.5 A: Black color. Came without a head, so no comment there.

4.0 S: Good balance between roastiness and sweetness. Strong coffee aroma with sweet dark caramel. Perhaps a touch of chocolate. Not too complex, but quite pleasant.

4.5 T: Like the nose - lots of coffee with ample amounts of sweet caramel giving this a velvety richness. Soft chocolate notes with perhaps a hint of smoke.

4.5 M: Heavier medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Wonderfully creamy. Great here.

4.5 D: A well made beer that is all around solid. Definitely the best beer I had out of the five I tried.

one of the 4 funky buddah growlers we opened, this was my personal favorite for sure.

nice dark brown pour with a good inch and a half of dark tan head that hangs on top of the glass for what seems like forever before it falls back down to earth. very solid look i have to admit. aroma is deep coffee and sweet chocolate notes that just seem to layer themselves on top of each other. smooth, sweet, and lightly bitter it coats the tongue and offers such a smooth, and easy flavor it comes across simply great. touches of light vanilla and a lightly dry and sweet finish seal the deal for me.

pours with about a finger of head, thankfully... these medicine bottle growlers are iffy. black as night with tiny creamy carbonation.
Nose is Holy roasty! and then you get a bit of the porter creaminess, chocolate etc that you expect from a porter. If you can get past the roast, it smells just like a porter should. I like roasty, but this smells like it may be a bit over the top.
ok, before taste, i have to talk about mouthfeel... this explodes in my mouth, the carbonation is simply amazing. so small, yet so incredibly explosive on the palate. Even after being in growler. only complaint would be that is a bit, thin, but it seems to work. easy to drink, and thicker would be just... weird.
anyway, on to the taste, roasty is subdued, it is not as in your face as the nose is, which is great. The chocolate comes out a bit, and is balanced by a nice sweetness from what I am guessing is a health helping of lactose, with a hint of bitter finish. near the middle a sweet vanilla creeps in right after the chocolate dies down.
Man, as much as the hype has given this place, this is my second brew from them, and I hate to say it, but this porter was damn good. It is one of the best porters I have had, and I have had a ton.
