Pours a nice solid black, with a modest tan head with good retention.

On the nose, it's clearly hoppy, with nary a roasty note to be found. Dank and piney, with a touch of citrus.

On the palate, this brew is exceptionally dank and earthy, with an interminable pungent aftertaste. It really overwhelms anything else going on, and essentially requires a chaser.

Oily, with a super long finish.

This hop profile is clearly not for me, but YMMV. As another detractor, I don't get any real roasty notes; if they're there, they're overwhelmed by the hops. All in all, that really takes away from the entire point of a black IPA.

Appearance: Arrives fudge brown with a tan head that piles high; impressive lacing action coats the glass

Smell: Hop forward, with a combination of citrus and pine; roast and coffee tones underneath

Taste: As in the aroma, the hops are prominent, bringing citrus and pine tones in front of the roasty malt aspect; the bitterness builds through the finish, with the malt playing a supportive role

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: A tough style to pull off, but Funky Buddha does it again with this one

On tap at the brewery. Served in a pint glass.

Appearance - Black and a little transparent at the edges. Nice khaki head. Three fingers at least. Thick collar.

Smell - Grassy and piney hops. Grapefruit. Roasty. Coffee roasted malts.

Taste - Bright hop flavor. Grapefruity. Sweet caramel immediately. Roasted malts come in the back end with a roasty bitterness. Hop comes back in the finish with some pine.

Mouthfeel - Medium body. Drinkable. Moderate bitterness.

Overall - I love this beer. I've always thought it was one of the Buddha's best.

32oz growler for a tasting. Dark black pour, a little oily with a nice lacing. Aroma is hoppy, malty, and grassy. Flavor is packed with a good amount of hops with a nice malt backing. Very well balanced and enjoyable. I'm not sure if they plan on making this a full time beer, but if you get a chance pick it up today

Now this is suppose to be a "Black IPA", and if you are to close your eyes and taste this beer IPA is the first impression. Then your palate is attacked by a smooth roasted malt flavor, somewhat smoke-y, and then hints of dark chocolate.

Seriously, this is what I envisioned a "Black IPA" to be like the first time I heard about the style, quite some time ago. I love the hop build and the roast-y malt backing is on point.

Ontap at the brewery.

A - pours dark dark brown with some amber hues on the edges when held up to light. 2 finger head that lingers briefly and then dissipates leaving a thin layer and lacing down the glass.

S - blast of hops, citrus/pineapple and a slight piney note. Some roast in the background and a noticeable malt presence.

T - surprisingly roasty and toasted bread followed by pine amd citrus hops. Leaves a smooth roasted chocolate flavor in the mouth very nice.

M - medium bodied and smooth malty goodness

D - loaded with flavor and at 7% easy drinking

The guys at Funky Buddha have not disappointed to date. This beer is no exception probably the best example of a true black Ipa I've had.
