Doc Brown AleDoc Brown Ale

Brewed by:
Funky Buddha Brewery
Florida, United States

Style: American Brown Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.40%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
This smooth and nutty Brown ale came to us in a moment of deranged clarity. English flaked oats and caramel malts create a distinctive combination that makes it a great everyday drinker. Bready, caramelly notes with a touch of cocoa and a smooth finish.

Funky Buddha Brewery - Doc Brown Ale. 6.4% ABV. 16oz pint glass ordered at the brewery.

Look: Deep amber/plum colored body, arriving with a half finger of off white head that leaves sticky lacing as it faded.

Smell: Caramel, toasted oats, and black cherry with some nuttiness backing it.

Feel: Medium bodied and smooth, with some nice carbonation.

Taste: Sweet nutty caramel and oats, along with the black cherry. Finishes a bittersweet nutty black cherry.

Overall: First beer had at the brewery while on vacation. I think this is severely underrated, especially when compared to other beers of the style.

On tap at Funky Buddha 5/22/2014.

A- Dark brown body with a half finger off-white head with little retention, not much lacing. Becomes quite placid really.

S- Initially, a nice nuttiness and brown sugar sweetness that is nice, that switches over to a nice smooth darker malt sweetness evoking a bit of coffee as well. On the sweeter side.

F- Conversely to the nose, the palate brings a black coffee flavour, though not as big as natural coffee additions that is a nice bitter counterpart to the sweet brown sugar and nuttiness. A bit of dark fruits on the backend, reminding me of raisins and cherry skins. Fairly solid, nothing is very strong or intense but this is certainly a drinkable brew.

M- Lighter bodied, not watery but on the thinner side. Lower on carbonation for the style, but not enough to detract significantly from my enjoyment of this.

O- Solid brown ale, the dark fruits add an interesting dimension to an otherwise straightforward brown ale.

A- it was kinda dark in the bar, but it was a nice dark brown, looked cloudy, and nice tan head.

S- I'm getting a lot of caramel, some chocolate, nuttiness, little grainy maybe and some hops hiding underneath everything.

T- taste of big caramel, toffee, finishes dry from the hops, very interesting as it warms, the dark fruits come out, plumbs, And sweet raisins.

M- medium body, pretty smooth, and dry.

O- overall I really enjoyed this beer, I really enjoyed the change as it warmed up. Very interesting.

32 oz. growler poured into a taster.

Appearance - Reddish brown. Kinda light for a brown. Nice off white head.

Smell - Umm. Kinda minerally. Caramel. Dry smelling.

Taste - Better. A little chocolatey. Caramel. Slightly nutty.

Mouthfeel - Very dry. Medium bodied.

Overall - Meh.

This is the base beer for a few of the Buddhas limited release brews. A very good version of a fairly mundane style.

Nice toasty smell, appearance is a fairly dark brown color and the taste balances roasted malt and sweetness very well. Overall a solid brown ale that is sure to please those that like the style.

Arrives an exceedingly dark brown with a finger high tan head sitting on it. Good lace.
Smell is nutty, toasted malt with some hops note.
Taste is heavily roasted malt, nut, hops, and caramel/toffee in the background.
Smooth, drying, medium bodied (at best) with a light tingle to the effervescence. A very nice beer.
