Leather Britches is an old southern method for preserving late-summer green beans. The beans are harvested, left in their pod and hung up to dry. Dehydrating on the string, they start to look like leather pant legs. Brewed in collaboration with Heidi Geist of the 48 Beer Project, we’re paying homage to a farm tradition with this dark, rich porter featuring a malty finish and hints of dark fruit and chocolate.

Been wanting to try this. The local co-op/health food store carries this beer. Early November and a good little bit of cool weather perfect 4A strong Porter hi on ABV for me dry finish. Damn good. Recall my mom's boyfriend talking about how they preserved green beans. After reading the write-up he wasn't bullshiting. Leather Britches. Would like to try more from this Brewery.

Clear, dark brown body; nice, bold carbonation; thick and creamy bone white head. Smell of lightly roasted grain with a touch of roasted nuts. Nice, clean taste; light roasted grain flavor with a mild sweetness to balanced things; mild to moderate bitterness. Medium body; smooth and silky on the palate; light residual sugar feel; slight dryness at the finish.

This is a rock solid brown ale, mildly sweet with a fine roasted grain personae.

Poured at 61 °F; no canning info seen on the can.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown with little light transmission and a half finger khaki head with good retention and nice lacing. Aroma of dark toasted malt, cocoa, a touch of coffee and light mineral note. Flavor is dark toasted malt with light char, dark chocolate, a little lactose and light dates. Medium bodied with light creaminess. A pleasant medium porter that starts out like a cross between a milk stout and export stout, then dries out, finishing more like the drier end of the export stout spectrum. Flavor is mellow, but solid throughout the taste. Nicely done; looks nice and hash an interesting flavor progression. Not sure what is has in common with dried beans, but it's a great name for a stout.

From the tall boy can in a snifter. This solid little porter pours a
dark brown with tea colored highlights, and a nice head of off
white foam that settles to a thick ring, thin dusty layer, and shows
some nice light lacing. Nose of dark cocoa, dark fruit touches of
blackberry, raspberry, and light char with subtle sweet caramel
and cream touches. Flavors surpass the nose with a fine presentation
of dark roasted malts, light coffee, dark cocoa, moderate char, dark
fruits notes, and subtle cream hints. Nice mouthfeel; medium body,
medium light carbonation, and a rich, roasted, bitter malt finish
that is lightly dry.

Overall, a solid porter from a solid brewery.

Cheers

a well made porter enjoyed on cask, a format which i think flatters this type of beer, and these guys really never miss. its got a deep rich brown color to it, a very minimal head in this medium, and some noticeable viscosity in the glass. the malt layers are impressive here, a toasted woodiness, roasty coffee, a marshmallow sort of sweetness, and some neat dried fruits, cocoa, and nuts, a veritable trail mix of malt characteristics if you will, both in aroma and flavor, and i found this to be relatively complex even without the usual old worldy saison yeast that ferments most of their beer, this seems clean and more english than belgian to me, definitely a deviation from their norm, but i dont miss it. there is a great smoothness to this from the cask, and the weird of the malt seems just right for it. a bit sweet at the end, but earthy and multidimensional too. not my favorite beer from these guys, i think they do best when they let their house yeast do most of the talking, and i love the bottle conditioning they do on most of them, but this is a solid porter done in an old world style thats been quite well executed. blackberry farm beers always get my stoke way up!
