Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.70%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
This deeply juicy stunner in the mold of City of the Sun and Booming Rollers will be replacing Aurora in the seasonal line-up next year. While our beloved red rye IPA will undoubtedly be missed, we think you’ll agree with our decision once you get a face-full of this outrageously tasty IPA. Brewed with Denali, Ekuanot, Citra, and Centennial hops, Critical Band is a blast wave of pineapple, papaya, and pink grapefruit over a crisp, restrained malt bill, before wrapping up in a soft, round finish that leaves you with warm feelings and an intense desire for another sip.

$ 4.99 (Including shipping)/16 oz can ($ 0.312/oz) from Tavour, Seattle, WA. Reviewed 10/8/18.
“Canned on 07/22/2018” on bottom of can. Stored upside down at 42 degrees and served at 42 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter.
Appearance – 4.25.
Body – Bright yellow, marked haze.
Head – Large (Maximum 5.2 cm, aggressive center pour), white, high density, good retention, diminishing to a one cm ring that slopes between 45 and 30 degrees to form a caldera with a center lake.
Lacing – Good. Medium wide ring of tiny to medium bubbles, showing multiple bifurcations and stalactites.
First pour – Light yellow, hazy.
Aroma – 4.25 – Juicy, mostly pineapple.
Flavor – 4.25 – Very pleasing pineapple and other fruit flavors. A bit of malt comes through. Seems less bitter than the 60 IBUs stated on the can. No alcohol, no diacetyl, no dimethylsulfide.
Palate – 4 – Medium, almost creamy, soft carbonation.
Impression and interpretation – 4.25 – Overall, an excellent IPA, even if it is a bit long in the tooth. In fact, it’s so good that I’m having difficulty putting the glass down long enough to type.

Presentation: 16 oz. can with the canning date printed on the bottom. Served in a tulip glass.

Appearance: One finger head, hazy, opaque gold color. Good, patchy lazing.

Smell: Fruity hop aromas of citrus peel and ripe mango with a hint of pine resin in the background.

Taste: Juicy and hoppy. Mainly pineapple and mango.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, creamy and medium bodied with medium-high carbonation.

Overall: Great tropical fruit character that keeps the bitterness at bay. The creamy mouthfeel is well executed. That said, it's pretty conservative in flavors and aroma. It could stand out more in these two areas.

Utterly fantastic. Some hopheads may not find it challenging enough to the palette. It is almost too drinkable.
It pours a hazy glowing yellow-orange with a bit foamy head. Aroma hits you with tropical fruit, especially mango and papaya, along with a little pineapple and sweet orange and even a hint of banana. The taste is exceptionally smooth, with fresh tropical hops that don’t linger after it’s swallowed. You get a tropical fruit basket with a gentle malt backing suggesting pale barley, oats, and wheat. There may be a hint of honey but I would disagree with observations of caramel malt sweetness. Its body is on the lighter side yet it succeeds via creaminess and flavor. A wonderfully refreshing drink.

Medium gold color hazed to near-opacity under a foamy white cap... Presents a nice tropical, citric, and floral aroma, with maybe just a hint of distant pine, followed by taste impressions of juicy grapefruit with a kiss of pineapple and pale melon, and undercurrents of mild orange, mango and papaya - perhaps a brief flash of something akin to berry... Smooth and soft, courtesy, no doubt, of the oats and wheat; very mild bitterness, but also not too sweet - I'd say that's pretty mild, too - for an overall drinking experience I'd describe as light, clean, and refreshing, while still offering a full mouth-feel with plenty of pleasing flavors and aromas... A really nice beer... Features Denali, Ekuanot, Citra, Simcoe, and Centennial hops, and Two Row, Golden Naked Oats, White Wheat, and Maris Otter Malts...And wow - this was a 6/4/18 canning - musta been even better fresher!
