Misc.: Quick review

Ordered this after stopping by Modern Times after RAW and some food from The Habit. Had a half-pour of Power Word Kill, then dug into this bad boy. Broke my rule of reviewing a taster, but really wanted to review it. Description called it, “Fragrant bourbon barrels, cinnamon, and cocoa intermingle in spectacular fashion in this exceptionally tasty version of our Monsters’ Park imperial stout. Ready you palate for an onslaught of decadent complexity that we think you’ll be extremely eager to repeat.” Double-checked with the beertender to make sure I was checking into the right beer as this description didn’t have piloncillo.

Poured a pitch black color with 1-to-2 fingers of khaki tan frothy head. No noticeable bubbles. Excellent layered lacing. Outstanding retention. (Sight - 4.25)

Smelled vanilla, cane sugar, cinnamon, coconut, cocoa nibs, milk chocolate, caramel, toffee, horchata and oaky spice. (Smell - 4.25)

Tasted so damn good. Got cinnamon, coconut, vanilla, cane sugar, horchata, cocoa nibs, milk chocolate, caramel, toffee, smooth bourbon, oaky spice and fudge. (Taste - 4.50)

Full body. Sticky texture. Average carbonation. Long, warming finish. (Feel - 4.75)

Just an awesome beer. About as good as I would’ve hoped. (Overall - 4.50)

Had this at BeerNV's tap takeover with Modem Tones, this was the Soviet one as I referred to it (CCCP). Pours that used motor oil black consistency, good 1/3" light brown head on the top of it. Aroma dropped coconut and cinnamon first, bourbon and roasted malt next. What is Piloncillo? I dunno and couldn't tell you what it did here.

Taste was pretty nice the adjuncts made it more drinkable than it should be at this strength. They came off as significant in proportion, but not dominating each other. Chocolately makes it too drinkable. If there was a slight drawback, I could have been happier with a less thick body. It gets real difficult to nail these high abv massive stouts sometimes when you're choking down roasted bitterness and hefty abv heat. I would definitely come back and check it out on draft any time it is available. As far as a to go purchase, I dunno, there's a lot of these kinds of beers out there, much less from the very same region of the country/state. Just depends what my other stash quantity is I guess.

Another brilliant BBA Monster's Park variant. What I like about this one is that no one ingredient overpowers another. This beer, is well-balanced, smooth, rich, a little decadent and has just a kick of spice to it from the cinnamon. Great cold weather beer...or in San Diego, mid-60's. Close enough.

Received as an extra in a trade and shared with JLindros.

A - Poured into a Kate the Great tulip a nice dark almost black hue with a thin tan head that fades to leave light wisps and really great legs.

S - Aromas of fudgy chocolate, light coconut, huge cinnamon, brown sugar swirled brownies, great vanilla bourbon.

T - Taste is similar to the nose with excellent dark chocolate fudge and dense brownie notes, just lovely cinnamon notes, great bourbon as well along with dense raw brown sugar.

M - Mouthfeel is nicely carbonated, creamy, alcohol hidden well.

O - Overall this was a very very nice imperial stout. Great spices and bourbon notes.

thanks to rudzud
Nice fluffy smaller head that fades semi quickly but fluffys up nicely when swirled, with nice lacing, and stains the glass level of legs, super dark molasses brown black color

Nose is interesting, super dark chocolate cocoa, raw cocoa nibs, a bit of an interesting nutty thing, big cinnamon bark, raw cinnamon, a big brown sugar molasses thing, plenty of vanilla and juicy bourbon, hint of coconut

Taste brings loads of everything good, tons of cinnamon bark, some dark chocolate and creamy fudgey cocoa, plenty of brown sugar molasses thing as well, a little sugar daddy toffee caramel as well, plenty more vanilla and barrel notes, toasted oak, a bit coconut as well, into a mild nutty earthy note with some bourbon sweet candy, bourbon barrel aged with cinnamon, some dark chocolate and cocoa nibs, finishes a touch drier, just a touch of warming booze, plenty more of all the good flavors

Mouth is fuller bod but not too thick or heavy, decent carb, just a bit of warming alcohol

Overall really nice, great everything I expected to be in there, awesome cinnamon, good coconut, great dark chocolate cocoa, some brown sugar molasses, incredible everything
