This collaboration with the homies at Heater Allen is a take on a traditional Festbier. Brewed with a nearly-even blend of Vienna & pilsner malts and a sprinkling of Munich & Carabohemian, the beer was then hopped with a dash of German Tettnang. The result is pretty much liquid gold, with beautiful notes of honeysuckle, allspice, and light biscuit, and a touch of hazelnut on the nose. Once you taste it, you’ll be psyched that we put this one in a bigger can.

Clear golden amber brew with plenty of foam in the big tulip. Aroma of hay bales and shredded wheat. Pleasantly sudsy on the tongue. Malty with just the right tang of mild acidity. Less sweet than many Oktobersests but still has that rich caramel taste. A pleasant quaff but just a bit light on flavor.

Light copper body. Crisp biscuit, toasted malt and a nice mild caramel sweetness. Balanced out by a nice floral hop bite with a touch of lingering caramel. Medium lighter bodied, good carbonation.

19.2 oz. can. Pours clear amber. Smells of spicy hops and toasty malt. Tastes of hints of caramel before spicy hops take over. Toasted bread makes an appearance and spicy hops surge in the finish. Traditional Festbier is a stretch, but it's delicious. I like the aggressive German hop profile.

Price: $4.25
From: Modern Times Lomaland in Point Loma (San Diego), Calif.
Purchased: Sept. 9, 2020
Consumed: Sept. 13, 2020
Misc.: Canned on Sept. 1, 2020

Ordered this on Sept. 9 when I picked up some others from September’s first release. Was surprised to see that I hadn’t tried it yet. Email description had it as, “This collaboration with the homies at Heater Allen is a take on a traditional Festbier. Brewed with a nearly-even blend of Vienna & pilsner malts and a sprinkling of Munich & Carabohemian, the beer was then hopped with a dash of German Tettnang. The result is pretty much liquid gold, with beautiful notes of honeysuckle, allspice, and light biscuit, and a touch of hazelnut on the nose.”

Poured a light amber clear color with 3-to-4 fingers of frothy white head. Lots of fast-moving bubbles coming up from the bottom of the glass. Excellent spotty lacing. Excellent retention. (Sight - 4.50)

Smelled toasted biscuit, toasty malts, brown bread, caramel, hazelnut, allspice, graham cracker and hints of honey. Not quite as good from the can, but a little earthier. (Smell - 4.25)

Tasted almost as good as the nose. In order got toasted biscuit, brown bread, bitter wood, earthy malt, caramel, hazelnut, allspice, graham cracker, herbal and hints of honey. (Taste - 4.00)

Medium body. Creamy texture. Average carbonation. Abrupt, bitter finish. (Feel - 4.00)

This was outstanding overall. (Overall - 4.00)

Pours a dark orange color. Mostly clear, but not completely so as there is a slight cloudiness to it. Initial pours produces a nice frothy 3 finger head that steadily dissipates until just a thin film of foam remains on the top of the beer. Some splotchy lacing is left on the glass as the beer is consumed.

Aroma has notes of bready malts with a slight honey sweetness, and crusty biscuit. Relatively straightforward but very good.

Taste has notes of crusty, slightly toasted bread, slight honey sweetness again coming through, with some spicy, earthy hops on the back end.

Mouthfeel is a bit doughy, making it fuller bodied. Bright, but very smooth carbonation. Somewhat drier on the back end, but not really "dry".

Overall an outstanding festbier - especially for an American brewed one.

On the lighter side of amber for the style. Very nice head production and retention. Body is crystal clear.

Nice nose, with a toasty and herbal aroma. Light honey, pepper, and flowers.

Straightforward profile: mixture of caramel and pale malts (perhaps Vienna as well), with balancing herbal hops. Malt base is the showcase despite the ABV. Very light honey; chewy pale dough.

Crisp and lively. A touch slick. A really nice Oktoberfest, on the lighter side, but very drinkable.

Thanks to Dimidiata for this one from a recent ninja box, during NBS BIF #12. 19.wuteveroz can (dated, but unreadable, batch #379) poured into 14oz teku. Poured a bright, clean, clear coppery-gold color, with just under an inch of white head that had very good retention and good lacing.

The aroma was malt-forward, slightly sweet, with some spicy and floral hops.

Very similar on the tongue, but the hops were brighter, and had a bit of bite.

The body was medium-full, smooth, had good carb, and a semi-sweet finish that dried out after a moment.

Drinkability was very good, the kind of brew you could knock 3 or 4 off, if it were in a sensible format.

Overall, a very nice take on the style. My biggest gripe is this dumb-assed can. Certainly worth your time if you see it.

Thank you dimidiata for this
19.2 oz can, dated 9/1/20, poured into a mug

A- A clear amber with two finger white head.

S- Biscuits, floral, a little earthy, hints of caramel.

M- Biscuits, caramel malts, hints of toasted malts, floral, earthy, a little herbal.

M- Smooth, medium body.

O- A solid festbier, this is heavier on the floral side and I tend to like them a little sweeter and more toasted.

This one pours a light clear orange-amber color, with a small head, and lots of lacing.

This smells like bittersweet caramel malt, leafy hops, oak, biscuit, and bread.

This is super solid, with a deep biscuity malt backbone, and some light oak from the fouders. There’s some light citrusy hops, and some spice from the hops, along with caramel.

This is light bodied, and clean, and crisp, with a great drinkability and a smooth mouthfeel.

This is two great (but opposite) breweries coming together and making a really great malty lager. I am a big fan.
