This take on a classic doppelbock was built on a wonderfully complex malt bill of Munich, Pilsner, Caramunich III, Caraaroma, Carafoam, & Carafa I, and lightly hopped with Spalter Select. It’s a dark, rich, malty marvel that’s like a warm winter blanket for your taste buds.

Glass: Tioga-Sequoia 13-oz. tulip
Price: $5.50
From: Modern Times Lomaland in Point Loma (San Diego), Calif.
Purchased: May 13, 2020
Consumed: May 16, 2020
Misc.: Canned on Dec. 5, 2019
Pre-ordered this the previous Saturday, along with a pair of hazy IPA 4-packs, a pilsner 4-pack and a barrel-aged stout. Recently had a fantastic doppelbock from Enegren and was hoping this was somewhere in the same ballpark. Online description read, “This take on a classic doppelbock was built on a wonderfully complex malt bill of Munich, Pilsner, Caramunich III, Caraaroma, Carafoam, & Carafa I, and lightly hopped with Spalter Select. Poured copper clear color with two fingers of off-white frothy head. Could see just a few bubbles coming up along the sides of the glass. Average eatery lacing. Poor retention. (Sight - 3.00)
Smelled caramel, toast, brown bread, brown sugar, nutty malts, wood and light maple syrup. Much better out of the glass than the can. (Smell - 4.25)
Taste followed the nose. In order got toast, brown bread, caramel, toffee, nuts, toasty malts, dark fruit and dates. (Taste - 4.00)
Medium body. Creamy-to-sticky texture. Average carbonation. Long, toasty finish. (Feel - 4.25)
Really liked this overall. An outstanding doppelbock. (Overall - 4.00)

Canned 05 Dec , brewed in Portland.
A dark caramel, mostly clear until the last little bit, this beer is capped with a dense, light brown head with good retention and lacing. The nkse is what you'd expect from the style, very tastefully done. Toasted, mildly caramelized wheat bread, dark wheat, a moderate Munich malt character are present. Mildly hoppy as well, with earth and a touch of wood. The palate opens mildly sweet with a moderate caramelized and burnt bread bitterness. There's a mild dried fruit character with a little bit of golden raisins flavor, though not particularly sweet. Deep, bready undertones are present through the palate. Medium full in body and moderately carbonated, this beer finishes bready and mildly bittersweet. While a little sweeter than ideal, this is Quite excellent.
