Collaboration with Cellarmaker.
This blend of bourbon barrel-aged and stainless imperial stout was infused with Dutch-process cocoa powder, a hefty 3lbs-per-barrel of house-roasted Brazil Eagle coffee beans, and a 50/50 blend of Papua New Guinea and Tanzanian vanilla. It’s just the kind of cozy, liquid blanket of delicious decadence we could probably all benefit from right about now.

This one pours a fairly dark black color, with a small head, and not much lacing.
This smells like milk chocolate, caramel, vanilla, bourbon, and coffee.
This is a few years old, so I imagine the coffee character was a little more bodacious a while back, but it’s still here. This is my second to last bottle of Modern Times in my cellar – I’ll be very sad when I’m finally out, as I assume they’re not really going to be making stuff like this anymore now that they’re owned by Maui. This has a nice little spicy and sweet barrel character, a touch of vanilla, and generally just a very nice chocolatey and smooth base stout flavor.
This is medium bodied, pretty mellow and not that boozy, with a nice drinkability.
This isn’t quite as outrageous as this brewery could get, but it was certainly quite enjoyable.

22 oz bomber into a snifter
Rich, viscous brew, offering a strong bouquet of coffee and oak and vanilla. Coffee-forward on the palate, with distinct notes of vanilla and chocolate. Undertones of anise and carob usher in a long, sweet finish.
Liked this more as it warmed up. I’m skeptical of coffee-bomb brews, but this is layered enough to be unique and compelling.

650 mL bottle. Black. Not much of a head. Smells of vanilla, coffee, chocolate, and bourbon. Tastes of coffee and bourbon. Vanilla all over. Chocolate behind it all. Finishes with booze and chocolate. Super boozy and heavy. But very tasty.

Thank you Dimidiata for this
22 oz bottle poured into a tulip
A- Black with a small mocha head.
S- Chocolate, fudge, vanilla, coffee, some roasted malts, bourbon, hints of oak.
T- Chocolate, vanilla, bourbon, dark fruits, coffee, some roasted malts, oak, touch of caramel.
M- Smooth, full body.
O- A big and tasty stout. Definitely on the sweet side but the barrel and coffee do bring a balance to it.

poured from a 22oz bottle into a snifter. pours an oily, inky jet black with almost no head. bitter coffee, chocolate, toffee and fudge in aroma and flavor. full bodied mouthfeel. not the best i’ve had from MT but also not the worse. this isn’t super complex but it’s a straight cocoa shake in stout form!

Glass: Pure Project 16-oz. brandy snifter glass
Price: $19.50
From: Modern Times Lomaland in Point Loma (San Diego), Calif.
Purchased: May 13, 2020
Consumed: May 29, 2020
Misc.: No bottled on date
Pre-ordered this along with two hazy IPA 4-packs, pilsner 4-pack and a dopplebock. Their email description read, “This blend of bourbon barrel-aged and stainless imperial stout was infused with Dutch-process cocoa powder, a hefty 3lbs-per-barrel of house-roasted Brazil Eagle coffee beans, and a 50/50 blend of Papua New Guinea and Tanzanian vanilla. Poured a pitch black color with two fingers of khaki-tan frothy head. Serene setting underneath. Average lacing. Average retention. (Sight - 3.75)
Smelled just phenomenal. In order got cocoa, marshmallow, vanilla, milk chocolate, chocolate milk, dark roasted coffee beans, caramel, toffee, hints of butterscotch and Bear Claws. (Smell - 4.50)
Tasted almost as good. Not quite. In order got cocoa, milk chocolate, chocolate milk, toasted marshmallow, vanilla, semi-char wood, dark roasted coffee beans, caramel, toffee, pecan and bear claw. That 14 pct. ABV was very well hidden. (Taste - 4.50)
Full body. Sticky texture. Average carbonation. Long warming finish. (Feel - 4.50)
Just a fantastic stout. Loved every minute of it. World-class. (Overall - 4.50)
