Our year-round pilsner spent two and a half glorious months in our heavy-toast American oak foeders before a generous dry-hopping with this magical German hop variety. The resulting beverage is a deliciously complex, 4.8% bundle of citrusy joy wrapped in a delicate oaky blanket.

Glass: Clear 16-oz. Bruges beer glass
Price: $15.00 for a 4-pack
From: Modern Times Lomaland in Point Loma (San Diego), Calif.
Purchased: June 20, 2020; Picked up June 25, 2020
Consumed: June 25, 2020
Misc.: Canned on June 18, 2020
Ordered three 4-packs of a special release, including this one. I really like Ice and even liked the one Foeder variant I had before, giving one Foeder Dry-Hopped with Czech Saaz taster a 4.50 on Mary 27, 2019 and writing, “One less taster I’ll have to have at the Firestone Invitational on Saturday. This is awesome.” The email description of this one read, “Our year-round pilsner spent two and a half glorious months in our heavy-toast American oak foeders before a generous dry-hopping with this magical German hop variety. The resulting beverage is a deliciously complex, 4.8% bundle of citrusy joy wrapped in a delicate oaky blanket.” Recently liked Saphir in Burgeon’s Pistil pilsner and I remember really liking it. Was looking forward to this one.
Poured a medium yellow clear color with 2-to-3 fingers of rocky-to-frothy off-white head. Lots of bubbles coming up from the bottom of the glass at fast speeds and almost as fast along the sides of the glass. Perfect spiderweb foamy lacing. World-class foamy retention. (Sight - 4.75)
Smelled oak, toast, caramel, grass, tangerine, cracker, sweet grain, Czech Saaz, white pepper, Saphir and citrus zest. Most toasted oak from the can. Almost smelled more like a Maibock or Doppelbock with that oak. (Smell - 4.00)
Tasted better than the nose, getting better with each sip. In order got oak, toasted brown bread, bitter wood, caramel, Czech Saaz, black pepper, sweet grain, bitter tangerine rind, citrus zest and grass. Still new to Saphir, but definitely got that tangerine, spice and (dark) fruit. Seemed stronger than 4.8 pct. ABV. (Taste - 4.25)
Medium body. Oily texture. Average-to-lively carbonation. Abrupt, bitter finish. (Feel - 4.00)
May have underrated this slightly, but outstanding overall. (Overall - 4.00)
